Division 1, County Senior Football League, Round 5.
Templenoe 2-12, Rathmore 6-18.
Templenoe hopes of survival in Division 1 suffered another setback last Sunday, after they well beaten at home by Rathmore. Templenoe were once again short a number of key players, which made the task difficult against a strong Rathmore side determined to bring to an end Templenoe’s impressive record against them in recent years.
The match was played in ideal conditions and before throw in there was a minute’s silence observed for the late Mick Granville. Rathmore got the scoring underway with a point from Mark Reen inside the first minute. Templenoe responded with two scores on the trot from Pat Spillane and Teddy Doyle to put the home side in front for the first and only time of the game. Darragh Rahilly and Mark Reen traded points with Pat Spillane before Kenneth O’Keefe made a good save from Dara O’Connor after he gathered a dangerous ball in from Teddy Doyle. However, a minute later it was Rathmore who got in for their first goal, that was finished to the net by Geogre O’Keefe from close range. This set the tone for the rest of the game. The East Kerry side followed up their goal up with four unanswered points courtesy of Daniel O’Sullivan, John Moynihan, Darragh Rahilly and Chrissie Spiers. Then Rathmore’s second goal was preceded by a pointed free from Teddy Doyle, before John Moynihan capitalized on a mistake by the Templenoe defence to fire the ball into the back of the net. The home side were struggling to make any impact and found themselves completely out run by Rathmore who added a third goal from John Moynihan, as well as points from Chrissie Spiers, Mark Reen and Darragh Rahilly before the break, while Templenoe had scores from Teddy Doyle and Pat Spillane,
Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-06, Rathmore 3-10.
On resumption, Rathmore continued where they left off and were ruthless and relentless in attack in the opening minutes of the second half. Their fourth goal of the day came from Mark Reen, before Chrissie Spiers and Brendan O’Keefe raised two more green flags in quick succession to put the contest well and truly to bed. Templenoe had to wait until the 43rd minute for their next score, with Josh Crowley Holland striking home their first goal. In a rare good spell for Templenoe, they went on to get the next two points in a row, before Josh Crowley Holland converted a penalty after he himself was fouled. The remaining minutes of the game saw Rathmore tag on four more points from Chrissie Spiers (3) and Cillian O’Connor, against four for Templenoe with Pat Spillane (2), Josh Crowley Holland and Teddy Doyle the providers. This result means that Templenoe will probably need to win four of their remaining six county league games, if they are to retain their Division 1 status for another year.
