Waterville 0-09, Templenoe 2-09,

Templenoe advanced to the second round with a good victory away to Waterville in the County Intermediate Football Championship. The match was played on a dry pitch with a strong breeze flowing across the pitch, that favoured the hosts in the first half.

Waterville opened the scoring with a free by corner forward Stephen O’Dwyer, but a brace of points on the fourth minute by Brian Crowley and Danny Cahalane saw Templenoe take the lead. Danny Cahalane’s point came when he launched in a free kick from half way and it bounced over the bar. Oran Clifford kicked the home side’s first point from play, and this was soon followed by a pointed free by Stephen O’Dwyer. Stephen O’Sullivan again pointed for Templenoe leaving the score on the fifteen minute mark, Waterville 0-03, Templenoe 0-03.

The following ten minutes witnessed lengthy delays due to injuries to two Waterville players, but both were able to play on. When the match got going again, the next score came Templenoe’s way when a flowing hand passing move involving the Templenoe attack up the left hand side of the field resulted in a goal for Pat Spillane. Templenoe did not kick on from this and the last two points of the half were scored by Waterville, leaving the half time score, Waterville 0-05, Templenoe 1-03.

The second half scoring was initiated with a point by Stephen O’Sullivan. Tadhg Morley and Waterville sub Fergal Cronin then swapped scores, before Stephen O’Sullivan kicked another. Both teams were guilty of missing good chances in this period which kept the match in the balance. Points were swapped by Barry O’Dwyer and Killian Spillane, and then by Stephen O’Sullivan and Stephen O’Dwyer leaving the score with 15 minutes remaining, Waterville 0-08, Templenoe 1-07.

Josh Crowley-Holland worked hard to return Templenoe to a three point lead with a point, but despite good possession coming into the last ten minutes, Templenoe struggled to put Waterville away, and kicked three wides in a row. It was shaping up for a tense final few minutes until Pat Spillane scored Templenoe’s second goal of the match to extend their lead to six points. Cian Hallissey who came in as a sub early in the second half, pointed the visitor’s last point of the match. Fergal Cronin kicked Waterville’s last score in injury time, and the final whistle saw Templenoe victorious on a score of Waterville 0-09, Templenoe 2-09:
