John Mitchel’s 2-11, Templenoe 2-16
On a perfect Sunday afternoon for football, Templenoe played their first ever County Senior Football League match in Division 1. They were away to John Mitchel’s in their Ballyseedy complex, with a dry pitch and the sun shining all game long. The match itself was played at a frantic pace, with both teams guilty of errors due to the new season.
Templenoe had a dream start to their Division 1 campaign, and were 2-01 to 0-00 ahead after five minutes with the goals coming from Cian Hallissey and Brian Crowley. The home side worked their way back into the match, and kicked the next three points. Adrian Spillane extended Templenoe’s lead with a good point from play, before John Mitchel’s kicked their opening goal. This all happened with only fourteen minutes gone on the clock.
A Brian Crowley point was answered by a good period for John Mitchel’s where they drew level with Templenoe by the 27th minute. Templenoe finished off the half with three points from Killian Spillane (2) and Brian Crowley to leave the score at half time, John Mitchel’s 1-06, Templenoe 2-06.
It took both teams a while to settle in the second half and by the 40th minute, both teams had registered one point apiece. With a goal in the difference, points were swapped over the next five minute to leave the score on the 45th minute, John Mitchel’s 1-09, Templenoe 2-09. Brian Crowley kicked an outstanding long range point, and the following period saw the visitors kick on to extend their lead to John Mitchel’s 2-14, Templenoe 1-10 with five minutes to go.
Templenoe should have been safe at this stage, but a snap shot from a John Mitchel’s free on the 21 yard line caught everyone off guard resulting in a goal. The home side followed up quickly with another pointed free, but while pushing on in the last few minutes, Templenoe found room to break fast up the field and kicked the last three points from Patrick Clifford, Brian Crowley and Killian Spillane.
Before the match, the Templenoe team received a guard of honour coming on to the field from the John Mitchel’s players. After the match we were presented with a plaque to commemorate our All Ireland success. We would like to thank the players and members of John Mitchel’s GAA Club for these great gestures.
