Division1 County SFL, Dingle V Templenoe
Dingle 2-11, Templenoe 3-10.
Templenoe who were short a number of first team starters due to injury and county commitments, did not know what to expect when they travelled back to Dingle for round 4 of the County Senior Football League. They did find that Dingle were short a quantity of players also on a beautiful and warm June Bank Holiday weekend.
Dingle started the match with a bang and had scored a goal on the 1st minute when Matthew Flaherty picked up on a rebounding ball to finish to the net. The breeze during the match blew across field and did little to help either teams. Templenoe settled into the match much quicker and some great attacking play from the inside forward line brought them right back into the match. After two pointed frees, a Pat Spillane long pass found Stephen O’Sullivan who turned his man and kicked a great goal. Soon after Stephen followed this up with a great point on the run. On the 10 minute mark, Templenoe were leading on a score of 1-03 to 1-00.
Liam Brosnan kicked the first point from the home team to start a good 10 minute period of pressure. Soon after a foul by Josh Holland resulted in a black card, and the resulting free was pointed. They followed up with another two pointed frees. The last 5 minutes of the half witnessed two points by Templenoe. Sean Sheehan and Stephen O’Sullivan were the scorers, but the visitors had passed up on a few further opportunities for goals.
The 2nd half opened up in the same fashion as the 1st with a goal at the dressing room end. This time it was a Templenoe goal, and a great turn and run at goal by Killian Spillane made space for Stephen O’Sullivan to volley the pass to the net. This was exactly what Templenoe needed, as the next ten minutes saw Dingle peg back the Templenoe lead. Brendan Kelleher kicked two points in a row (1 free) in that period and was collecting a lot of breaks around midfield for the home side. A further point from Cathal Bambury reduced the arrears to a single point, but a rare Templenoe attack saw a great one handed catch by Sean Sheehan, who passed to Pat Spillane and his long ball found Denis O’Neill who scored a great goal. This brought more breathing space for Templenoe with 20 minutes left in the match.
Barry O’Sullivan responded with a quick point for Dingle, and soon after a defensive mix up by the visitors put Cathal Bambury through who scored a goal to tie up the game on a score of Dingle 2-08, Templenoe 3-05. A free by Liam Brosnan put Dingle ahead, but Templenoe responded with a monster point from Adrian Spillane from out on the right wing. Dingle again attacked but this were turned over near the Templenoe goal, and somehow Mike Hallissey worked the ball out to midfield through a forest of players. The ball fell to Pat Spillane who kicked Templenoe back into the lead with a point.
Two errors by Dingle yielded further points for Templenoe. One was a line ball from a kick out that Stephen O’Sullivan pointed from the resulting attack, and the other was a pass out of defence that was pounced on by Sean Sheehan to kick a point. Denis O’Neill further extended Templenoe’s lead to four points with a point from play.
The final two scores came the way of the home side, but despite pressurizing for a goal, Templenoe did not give up any obvious opportunities and emerged victorious on a score of Dingle 2-11, Templenoe 3-10.
