Division 1, County Senior Football League, Round 7.
Templenoe 1-11, Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-9.
A below par performance from Templenoe saw them lose out at home to Glenbeigh/Glencar last Saturday evening.
Templenoe opted to play with the strong breeze in the first half, but it was Glenbeigh who opened the scoring with a pointed free from Tommy Cahill. Templenoe responded with four unanswered points through Killian Spillane (free), Brian Crowley (2) and Teddy Doyle. However, the visitors were determined not to let Templenoe get away from them and hit back with a point from play from Dara Casey. The home side did go on to get the next three scores on the trot courtesy of Stephen O’Sullivan, John Rice and Killian Spillane. This made the score 0-7 to 0-2 after 18 minutes of play, but despite been wind assisted, Templenoe failed to add to their tally before the interval and this was to prove costly in the finish. Indeed, by the time the match was over Templenoe hit a total of 11 wides compared to 7 from the opponents. The remaining minutes of the half saw Glenbeigh tag on two more points from Tommy Cahill and Goalkeeper Rory O’Connor who did well to land a 45 over the bar against the strong breeze.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-7, Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-4
Templenoe had a bright opening to the second half with placed ball effort from Killian Spilliane, before Cian Hallissey put Pat Spillane through for the game’s first goal which gave the home side a 7 points cushion after 36 minutes. Bernard Murphy replied with a point for Glenbeigh and then came the turning point in the match when a goal bound effort from Stephen O’Sullivan was brilliantly saved by the keeper and a counter attack from the visitors saw a long ball kicked into Tommy Cahill who finished the ball to the net at the other end to bring them right back into the game. Glenbeigh were now dominating proceedings and they followed up their goal with the next three points in row with Bernard Murphy, Tommy Cahill and Dara Casey all hitting the target to level the scores at 1-8 a piece after 48 minutes. Matters got worse for Templenoe, when Glenbeigh corner back Michael Walsh reacted fastest to a broken ball, getting there just ahead of Keeper Anthony Sheehan to fist a low ball to the net. Killian Spillane (free) traded scores with Caolim Teahan with just three minutes to play. Templenoe tried hard against a very crowded defence to rescue something from this game, but two injury time points from Pat Spillane and Brian Crowley were not enough to salvage a result.
