Templenoe Crest

County Intermediate Football Championship, Round 3.

Templenoe 1-14, Glenbeigh/Glencar 3-07.

An injury time point by Stephen O’Sullivan just shaded the win Templenoe in an exciting encounter, that could have gone either way. Templenoe now progress to the Semi Final of the competition with much relief after been pushed to the pin of their collar by a gallant Glenbeigh/Glencar side.

The match was played before a large crowd on a glorious evening last Saturday. Glenbeigh/Glencar opted to play with the slight breeze in the first half and they opened the scoring with a pointed free from Tommy Cahill. Templenoe countered this with Killian Spillane (2) and Patrick Clifford both splitting the posts to put the home side two points in front. Then came the first goal of the game, which stemmed from a route one ball into the square from Fergal Griffin that was neatly gathered by Gavin O’Grady before turning and slotting the ball to the net. Templenoe immediately responded with a hard earned point from Killian Spillane, after he combined with Josh Crowley Holland to tie up the scores again. The ebb and flow nature of the first half continued with Gavin O’Grady and Tommy Cahill exchanging scores with Brian Crowley (2) to make the score 0-6 to 1-3 after 27 minutes of play. In between, Caolim Teahan almost got a second goal for Glenbeigh/Glencar, but his effort struck the crossbar. Soon after Templenoe lost Patrick Clifford to a black card, but matters got worse for the hosts when Darran O’Sullivan found Gavin O’Grady with another long ball, before the latter unleased an extraordinary shot to the top corner of the net for a truly awesome finish. This put the visitors four points ahead, before once again Templenoe sharp shooter Killian Spillane replied with another effort from play. Then just before the break, the visitors suffered a big setback of their own, when wing back Jack Brosnan picked up a second yellow card to reduce Glenbeigh/Glencar to 14 players for the second half.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-07, Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-04.

Templenoe had the perfect start to the second half with Adrian Spillane sprinting up the field to pop the ball over the bar just seconds from throw in. In the next eight minutes, both sides were guilty of wides, while Glenbeigh/Glencar went on to lose another player, this time to the black card rule with their other wing back Stephen O’Sullivan falling victim. Nevertheless, the away side kept up their intensity levels and two pointed frees from Tommy Cahill put the away side 2-6 to 0-9 ahead midway through the second half, with Templenoe’s ninth point coming courtesy of Brian Crowley. The final quarter was real edge of the seat stuff with Brian Crowley and Gavin O’Grady trading scores, before Caolim Teahen cut in from the right corner to give a precision pass across the Templenoe goal that was finished home by Tommy Cahill for Glenbeigh/Glencar’s third goal. To their credit Templenoe did not drop their heads, despite been six points down with only ten minutes of normal time remaining.  Their comeback started with a placed ball effort from Stephen O’Sullivan, before Killian Spillane set up Teddy Doyle for a well taken goal, to put just two points between the sides. The visitors came very close to getting yet another goal in the 55th minutes, but fortunately the home side just about managed to divert Gavin O’Grady’s effort out for a 45, to deny him a hat trick. Glenbeigh/Glencar failed to manufacture a score from the resultant 45 and Templenoe’s resilience was eventually rewarded when Killian Spillane and Stephen O’Sullivan both thumped over frees to level the scores at the end of normal time.  Then in injury time, Sean Sheehan did brilliantly to turnover possession from a Glenbeigh/Glencar attack, before John Spillane and Tadgh Morley linked up to put Stephen O’Sullivan through for the match winning point.
