Templenoe 3-20, Glenflesk 1-11
A top drawer performance by Templenoe saw them cruise to victory against Glenflesk in Fitzgerald Stadium last Sunday. Templenoe are now through to their third County Intermediate Football Final in four years, where they will face An Ghaeltacht in a repeat of the 2017 decider. The match was played in ideal conditions, with little or no breeze on lovely afternoon in Killarney. Templenoe got off to the best possible start with Adrian Spillane soloing straight through the Glenflesk defence to kick the ball past keeper Marc Kelleher for Templenoe’s first goal, after only 11 seconds of play. A brace of points from Killian Spillane (2) and Josh Crowley Holland extended Templenoe’s lead to six, before Glenfesk finally registered their first score through the boot of Jeff O’Donoghue in the 6th minute. The East Kerry side almost followed this up with a goal, but a blistering shot from Daniel O’Brien came off the crossbar. Instead it was Templenoe who would go on to get the next goal of the game, courtesy of the on fire Killian Spillane, with Brian Crowley providing the assist. This put Templenoe 2-03 to 0-01 ahead after 13 minutes. Glenflesk responded well with two quick points from Ian Roche and Daniel O’Brien, but Templenoe hit back just as quickly with two scores of their own, thanks to Teddy Doyle and Brian Crowley. Then in a good three minutes spell for Glenflesk, they thumped over three unanswered points with Patrick Darcy, Jeff O’Donoghue (free) and Brian O’Donoghue all finding the range. This reduced the arrears to five points. However, the remaining 12 minutes belonged to Templenoe, as they continued to dominate around the middle of the field, ensuring a plentiful supply of ball going into the forwards, while their defence were resolute, conceding only one more point to Glenflesk’s Patrick Darcy before the interval. Templenoe’s great utilization of the wide open spaces in Fitzgerald Stadium, saw them tag on five more scores with Killian Spillane (2), Brian Crowley, Stephen O’Sullivan and Cian Hallissey all contributing to give them a commanding lead at the break.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 2-10, Glenflesk 0-07.
Templenoe remained determined and focused coming out for the second half and they immediately demonstrated their intent with Killian Spillane, Brian Crowley and Josh Crowley Holland all splitting the posts to increase their advantage. Then in the 37th minute, against the run of play Glenflesk launched an attack that ended with Patrick Darcy finding the net after good work by Shane Courtney. Soon after Sean Doherty added a point to give the East Kerry side a glimmer of hope, but Templenoe were having none of it, as they proceeded to turn the screw. Four points on the trot from Adrian Spillane, Brian Crowley, Teddy Doyle and Killian Spillane, preceded Templenoe’s third goal of the day. Their third green flag came about after Killian Spillane put his cousin Pat Spillane through on goal, Pat Jnr still had much to do as he was surrounded by three Glenfesk defenders, but he somehow managed to get a shot in to deceive them all. This made the score 3-17 to 1-8 after 50 minutes of play. Gavin Crowley and Sean Sheehan were next to get their names on the score sheet for the boys in blue, after they got in on the end of two more well worked attacks. Pat Spillane rounded off Templenoe’s superb display with a fine point, after he received a pass from John Rice. While Glenflesk had to settle for three late points from Jeff O’Donoghue, Patrick Darcy and Kieran Murphy on a tough day at the office for them, but nevertheless they are good young side and are likely be in contention again next year.
So a big week ahead for the club, with Templenoe earning another shot at winning the club’s first ever Intermediate title, in what promises to be a fascinating contest in Austin Stack Park, next Sunday.Very best of luck to all our players and management in the final!
