Templenoe 5-12, St Saviours (Waterford) 2-09.
Six months on from winning the Club’s first County Intermediate football title, Templenoe welcomed St Saviours (Waterford) to our GAA Grounds for the Quarter Final of the Munster Intermediate Club Championship last Saturday afternoon. It was another proud day for Templenoe, who also greeted the return of the Kerry quartet for this eagerly awaited fixture.
The match was played in wet, cold and wintery conditions and it was Templenoe who had the aid of the strong breeze for the first half. Stephen O’Sullivan opened the scoring in the second minute of the game, when he hand passed the ball over the bar, after he was put through by Gavin Crowley. Killian Spillane added a second score, before St Saviours opened their account with a well taken point from Darragh Corcorcan. The latter then levelled matters with a pointed free, but then a long range effort from Brian Crowley ended up in net, after the Saviours keeper appeared to misjudge the flight of the ball for Templenoe’s first goal. Further scores followed from Josh Crowley Holland, Killian Spillane and Brian Crowley before Derek Corcoran hit back with two pointed frees on the trot for the Waterford side. St Saviours were giving Templenoe enough of it at this stage and then the game was blown open, when the visitors were awarded a penalty after Templenoe goalie Danny Cahalane fouled Joseph Phelan inside the square. The referee issued a black card to Danny Cahalane and his replacement Cathal Granville stood no chance of stopping the resultant spot kick that was perfectly converted by Joseph Phelan. This made the score 1-05 to 1-04 after 18 minutes of play. However, Templenoe quickly regrouped and responded emphatically to this setback to score 2-03 without reply in the remaining 12 minutes of the first half. Teddy Doyle latched onto a short kick out from St Saviours, before pulling on the ball to take it past Brian Power for the home side’s second goal. Then five minutes later, Stephen O’Sullivan combined with Cian Hallissey, with the former dispatching the ball to the net for Templenoe’s third goal to give them a 10 points cushion at the break.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 3-08, St Saviours 1-04.
Templenoe extended their lead with two more unanswered points inside the first 3 minutes of the second half courtesy of Killian Spillane and Stephen O’Sullivan. Soon after Templenoe manufactured their fourth goal, in a great team move that ended with Josh Crowley Holland setting up Brian Crowley who made no mistake with the finish. Both sides traded a few wides, before St Saviours eventually registered their next scores with Jack Flavin and David Griffin splitting the posts to make it 4-10 to 1-06 with 46 minutes on the clock. Templenoe though refused to allow their opponents back into the game and consolidated their position once more, when Killian Spillane delivered a lovely kick pass to Brian Crowley, who in turn buried the ball to the net to complete his hat trick. The home side followed up their fifth goal of the contest, with Pat Spillane slotting over two points in a row. In fairness to St Saviours they fought to the end and points from Shaun Corcorcan, Michael Merrigan (2), preceded their second goal, which came in injury time from Darragh Corcoran, after he turned over possession to reduce the margin to 12 points by the final whistle.
Templenoe now go on to meet Eire Og of Cork in the Munster Intermediate Semi Final, after a solid display overall, although their shooting did leave them down at times with a total of 12 wides. The Munster Intermediate Semi Final is fixed for Ovens at 1:30pm next Sunday, 17th November and we wish the Templenoe team and management the very best of luck!
