Garvey’s SuperValu 2020 County Senior Football Club Championship, Round 1

Dingle 1-12, Templenoe 3-07.

It was an evening that will live long in the memory of all Templenoe GAA Club members and supporters following a breathtaking win by our Senior team over match favourites Dingle in their own backyard on our debut year in the county senior championship. While it was very disappointing no spectators could attend this game due to the Covid-19 restrictions, there is no doubting how much this win meant to the Club. The draw for the next round of the County Championship will be awaited with great interest by all in Templenoe.

The match was played in wet and rainy conditions with Templenoe having a slight breeze advantage for the first half. The visitors got off to a perfect start with Brian Crowley opening the scoring inside the first minute. Dingle countered with an effort from Dylan Geaney, but it was Templenoe who dominated the possession early on and they had two successive wides, before Killian Spillane restored their one point lead. Five minutes later Conor Geaney pointed for the hosts and then the game took a turn in their favour when a ball across the Templenoe goal from Tom O’Sullivan ended with a superb strike to the net from Matthew Flaherty. Templenoe though refused this let this unsettle them and got a valuable point through Stephen O’Sullivan ahead of the first half water break to make the score 1-02 to 0-03.

On resumption, Dingle had a wide from play, before Killian Spillane slotted over two points on the trot -one from play and one from free to bring the contest back level. Then came the first goal for Templenoe - when Adrian Spillane passed the ball to Teddy Doyle who soloed towards the goal and despite been put under strong pressure from the Dingle defence, he somehow managed to get a shot in to gift Templenoe a three points lead. Tom O’Sullivan hit back with a point for Dingle, but they also suffered a setback in this period, when they lost Michael Geaney to injury. However, for Templenoe it was a case of onwards and upwards and soon after they rocked Dingle with another goal, after a high ball in from Sean Sheehan broke kindly for Killian Spillane who finished brilliantly to open up a five points lead for Templenoe. Dingle knew they had fight on their hands now, but they did cut the margin back to three with points from Conor Geaney and David O’Connor (45) before the interval. In between Templenoe keeper Mark Looney made a great and important save from Tom Leo O’Sullivan.

Half Time Score: Dingle 1-05, Templenoe 2-05.

The second half was only three minutes old when Brian Crowley cut through the Dingle defence before releasing the ball to the unmarked Josh Crowley Holland, who finished the ball to the net from the edge of the square. This increased the visitors lead to six points with the Templenoe faithful watching on in live stream now daring to dream of a famous win. However, there was still a long way to go and there was no chance of Dingle rolling over. True to form the hosts replied with four unanswered points courtesy of George Durrant, Conor Geaney (2) and Dylan Geaney to reduce the margin to two points. Killian Spillane briefly settled Templenoe’s nerves with a pointed free, but Dingle were coming back strong. In the ensuing passages of play they tagged on two more points from Conor Geaney and Tom O’Sullivan ahead of the second half water break to make the score 1-11 to 3-06.

The game was now set for a grand stand finish, but Templenoe’s concerns were increasing when the inspirational Adrian Spillane had to retire through injury ahead of the final quarter. When play resumed Dingle were off target with two attempts either of which would have levelled the contest and potentially provided them with a big psychological advantage going into the closing stages. However, the home side just could not land an equalizer and instead good work by John Rice paved the way for Templenoe’s sharp shooter Killian Spillane to fire over a pivotal point for the visitors. With time fast running out both sides were giving it absolutely everything and a point from Tom O’Sullivan did put the minimum between the sides again. But in contrast to 3 weeks ago against Kenmare, Templenoe were not going to be denied at the death this time and held on for a famous victory with all 17 players that saw game time playing their part. -Not least the lion hearted Gavin Crowley in defence and Tadhg Morley who kept County star Paul Geaney scoreless.

Templenoe are now through to the quarter finals of the county championship, a remarkable and proud achievement for a small club and make no mistake about it, Templenoe are well capable of going further in this competition. Well done to all involved and best of luck with the preparations for the next round, the draw for which takes place this evening (Sunday). Commiserations to Dingle, who will no doubt be back.

Credit also to the Irish Examiner and Kerry County Board for providing live streaming of the  game which facilitated all the supporters unable to attend the chance witness this historic win.

Dr Crokes 1-16, Templenoe 0-11.

Templenoe’s brave county championship campaign came to an end after a strong second half display from Dr Crokes gave them victory with 8 points to spare at FitzGerald Stadium Killarney last Sunday afternoon.

The game was played in ideal conditions and the first quarter in particular turned out to be a shoot-out between Killian Spillane and Tony Brosnan. Indeed there were no other scorers in the first 20 minutes, with both men continuing to show brilliant form, ahead of the resumption of the 2020 inter-county season. The opening score of the game stemmed from a Colin Crowley interception to set up Killian Spillane for the first of his six points total. Tony Brosnan replied with a pointed free for the Crokes. Then, these two marksmen repeatedly traded point for point to make the score four points apiece after 13 minutes. Two minutes earlier, Templenoe keeper Mark Looney did very well to stop a goal bound shot from Micheal Burns. While at the other end, Killian Spillane added another point for Templenoe, before Teddy Doyle looked to be through on goal only to see his effort go wide of the points to leave the score 0-05 to 0-04 at the first water break.

Dr Crokes then introduced Kieran O’Leary and started to come much more into the game when play resumed. They would go on to outscore Templenoe by six points to two before the half time whistle. Their purple patch started with Micheal Burns levelling the scores, Templenoe responded with a wonderful score from Adrian Spillane. But then Crokes tagged on fives unanswered points courtesy of Tony Brosnan, Kieran O’Leary (2), Micheal Burns and Chris Doncel to give the upper-hand in this contest. However, Templenoe did manage to get one more point before the break through Brian Crowley to keep them well in the game.

Half Time Score: Dr Crokes 0-10, Templenoe 0-07.

Templenoe had a bright beginning to the second half with Killian Spillane reducing the arrears to two points. Dr Crokes though had another trick up their sleeve with the introduction of Gavin White after the interval. A brace of points from Micheal Burns, Tony Brosnan and David O’Leary restored the Killarney’s side lead back to four points, but Templenoe battled on with Stephen O’Sullivan keeping them in touch with a point from a mark in the 37th minute. Not to be outdone Tony Brosnan also called the mark to bag himself another score, before Tadhg Morley combined with Adrian Spillane with the latter finding the range for his second point of the day. Micheal Burns then showed another side to his game, when he landed a 45 over the bar to give Dr Crokes a four points cushion ahead of the second half water break.

The contest was not yet won, but Templenoe had to make do without the services of Adrian Spillane for the remainder of the game due to injury. Dr Crokes opened up a five points gap for the first time in the match with yet another Tony Brosnan point, before Brian Looney signed his name on the scoresheet to put them 2 goals clear. Then Dr Crokes killed off any lingering hopes of a Templenoe upset, when a good team moved ended with Tony Brosnan putting Gavin White through for an easy goal from close range. But even towards the finish Templenoe did not capitulate and tried hard for a goal of their own, but it was not to be and ultimately they had to settle for fisted point from Teddy Doyle before the referee blew for full time.

All in all Templenoe still had a very good debut year at county championship level and will continue to draw encouragement from the famous win over Dingle last week ahead of the one big showdown clash remaining with Kilcummin to decide which Club remains at senior grade for 2021.

Kerry Petroleum Senior Football Club Championship, Relegation Play-off:
Templenoe 3-18, Kilcummin 0-14.
Templenoe secured a second year at senior grade following a very polished display from start to finish to overcome Kilcummin, by a 13 points margin in Fitzgerald Stadium last Sunday. This is another very significant achievement in the history of the Club. When one looks back over the records from the last 45 years, Templenoe were an Intermediate Club from 1976 to 1991, a Junior Club from 1992 to 1997, a Novice Club from 1998 to 2013. a Junior Club from 2014 to 2015, an Intermediate Club from 2016 to 2019 and now come 2021 we will be entering our second year in a row as a Senior Club.
Right from the beginning Templenoe showed their intent, with Killian Spillane scoring the first point of his very impressive 1-07 tally after he received a pass from Teddy Doyle inside the first minute. Kilcummin were off target with a few chances, one of which was nearly a goal, before a pointed free from Noel Duggan got them off the mark. Despite playing against the breeze for the opening half, Templenoe opened up a 2 points gap after 8 minutes with Killian Spillane making no mistake with 2 placed ball efforts. Kilcummin’s cause wasn’t helped when they had Chris O’Leary black carded early on, following an off the ball foul, but they did respond with another free from Noel Duggan. Killian Spillane traded scores with Shane McSweeney, before the opening goal of the goal of the game came from Josh Crowley Holland amid a goal mouth scramble. This put Templenoe 1-04 to 0-03 in front and was the perfect way for the team in blue to adjourn for the first water break.
When play resumed Templenoe’s Stephen O’Sullivan started coming more into the game in a big way and he soon bagged a goal and a point within a minute to extend Templenoe’s lead to 8 points. Soon after his team mate Martin Reilly got up the field to fire over a well taken point, to which Kilcummin replied with 2 points courtesy of Kerry Under 20 Star Paul O’Shea either side of another Stephen O’Sullivan point for Templenoe. Kevin McCarthy who was kept under tight rein throughout by Gavin Crowley did go close with two chances for goal only to be denied by two superb saves from Templenoe’s find of the season, Goalkeeper Mark Looney. Matters got worse for Kilcummin in the 27th minute when they had Gary O’Leary red carded. Brian Crowley swapped scores with Paul O’Shea, before Killian Spillane showed great composure and accuracy to split the posts with a super score with his left boot to put 10 points between the sides. Shortly before half time, Kilicummin’s Noel Duggan did bring the margin back down to 8 points, but Templenoe had the final say of the first half with Brian Crowley raising his second white flag of the day.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 2-10, Kilcummin 0-07.
Noel Duggan had a placed ball effort to get the second half scoring under way, as they tried to fight their way back into the game to which Templenoe replied with a point from Stephen O’Sullivan, after he combined with Colin Crowley. Templenoe then lost John Spillane to a second yellow card, but they remained focused on the job on hand, with Killian Spillane adding another score. Three minutes later a second Kilcummin player Kieran Murphy received his marching orders after he too picked up a second yellow card. Nevertheless, Kilcummin battled on and had the next two scores on the trot thanks to Noel Duggan and Kevin Gorman. But that was as close as they could get, as Killian Spillane restored Templenoe’s lead back to 9 points to make the score 2-13 to 0-10, just ahead of the second half water break.
The final quarter saw Templenoe turn the screw with the Crowley brother Colin (1) and Brian (2) along with Stephen O’Sullivan (1) hitting 4 unanswered points to extend Templenoe’s lead to 13 points. To their credit Kilcummin did respond with 3 points in a row of their own, through Kevin McCarthy (1) and Paul O’Shea (2). But then the icing was well and truly on the cake, when a high ball in towards the goal was contested by Kilcummin goal keeper Brendan Kealy who did get a fist to it, but unfortunately for him the loose ball was gathered by Killian Spillane, who in turn finished the ball home to an empty net. Soon after Kilcummin’s day was summed up, when Chris O’Leary was dismissed after he picked up a yellow card to add to the black card he received earlier in the game. The match ended with Paul O’Shea and Stephen O’Sullivan trading scores, before the referee pull blew full time on a comprehensive win for Templenoe.
Well done to all the players, management and backroom personnel on retaining Templenoe’s senior status. The team proved that Templenoe are well able to compete at this level and are no doubt capable of building on our debut season as a senior Club. Hard luck to Kilcummin, who were very much a bogey team for Templenoe in recent years and will bounce back from this defeat.
