Kenmare District 2-15 St Michael’s-Foilmore 3-08
A productive spell either side of the interval, proved decisive for Kenmare District who easily defeated St Michael’s/Foilmore in this Kerry SFC third round replay at Templenoe on Saturday evening.
The victors welcomed back former Kerry senior Paul O’Connor, who skippered the side from full-forward, but it was at midfield that the hosts laid the foundations for a victory which sets up a quarter-final with St Kieran’s on Saturday.
The O’Sullivan’s, Flor and Alan, dominated in the absence of Sean O’Connor as the Kenmare outfit dominated the early exchanges. They raced 0-5 to 0-2 clear by the end of the opening quarter, thanks to two points from Liam O’Shea, and a point each from Paul O’Connor (free), Stephen O’Brien and Adrian Spillane.
The South Kerry side were dependent on two frees from Eanna O’Connor (son of ex Kerry boss Jack), but the switching of the experienced Ronan O’Connor to the forty suddenly saw the momentum shift and St Michael’s/Foilmore enjoyed purple ten minute spell.
Eanna O’Connor kicked a super point from the sideline, and then in the 19th minute, a high Ronan O’Connor centre was misjudged by goalkeeper Stephen O’Sullivan and Johnny Clifford finished to the Kenmare net.
Points from Clifford and Eanna O’Connor (free) quickly followed and St Michael’s/Foilmore led for the one and only time (1-5 to 0-7).
Then came a masterstroke by the Kenmare District sideline in bringing in John Spillane at wing forward and switching Tadhg Morley to centre back to shackle Ronan O’Connor.
Kenmare District then struck for two goals in the 25th and 28th minutes both scored by Mark Crowley. With Paul O’Connor nailing a free the hosts led 2-8 to 1-5 at the break.Within five minutes of the restart the game was over as a contest, when Adrian and John Spillane along with Paul O’Connor added points for Kenmare. By the 45th minute they led 2-14 to 1-7, with Eanna O’Connor and Bernard Kelly scoring token points for the losers.
The last quarter was noteworthy only for a late spurt from St Michael’s/Foilmore that yielded 2-1 in the final five minutes, all scored by substitutes, with goals from Mark McCarthy and Dara O’Sullivan and a Sean O’Connor point, but Kenmare District’s thoughts were by then on their quarter-final clash with St Kieran’s.
