Templenoe 1-14, Kenmare 0-14

Templenoe won the Spillane Cup in an exciting match played in front of a good crowd in Templenoe. The home team started brightly and quickly opened up a two point lead through points from Patrick Palmer. Kenmare didn’t score until ten minutes into the game through Paul O Connor but by the 20th minute mark they had reduced Templenoe lead to one point, Templnoe 0-04, Kenmare0-03. The most decisive move of the game came on the 23rd minute when a fast Templnoe break up the field resulted in Sean Sheehan firing to the back of the net. Templnoe nearly followed up with a second goal straight after, but were unlucky to see a Brian Crowley shot hit the upright. The half time score was Templenoe 1-06, Kenmare 0-04, with all Kenmare scores coming from Paul O Connor.

Templenoe opened the second half scoring, but Kenmare started to do well around midfield and began to reel in Templenoe’s lead. The score on the 40th minute was Templnoe 1-07, Kenmare 0-08. A superb long range effort from Adrian Spillane was followed up by a Shane Cremin fisted point to leave 5 points the difference half way through the second half. Kenmare again ate into Templenoe’s lead through points from Paul O Connor and Dara Crowley. Both teams swapped scores before an Alan O Leary point reduced the difference to two points with 5 minutes left. Kenmare started to press on in the dying few minutes but this left space for Templenoe to exploit and they tacked on two points through Sean Sheehan and Brian Crowley. Two more Paul O Connor scores kept Kenmare in touch but as the game went into injury time John Spillane popped over the insurance point leaving the final score Templenoe 1-14, Kenmare 0-14.

After the game, Kenmare District Board Chairman PJ McIntyre thanked both teams for a thrilling game. He also complimented the condition of the Templenoe pitch and wished the Kenmare well in the junior club championship.  The man of the match award was presented to Sean Sheehan and the Spillane Cup trophy was presented to the club captain Shane Cremin and vice-captain Anthony Sheehan.
