Templenoe 3-17, Kilgarvan 0-04

Templenoe claimed the Den Finnegan Cup for the first time since 1993 with a good victory over Kilgarvan in very showery and damp conditions in Templenoe.

Templenoe opened the scoring through Patrick Palmer but a point by Kilgarvan corner forward Padraig Moran saw the side’s level. Two converted frees by Patrick Palmer edged Templenoe 0-03 to 0-01 in front before a good Kilgarvan move saw Patrick Moran rattle the Templenoe crossbar. The ball was cleared up the field and Patrick Palmer pointed from play. Another Templenoe free yielded a point and was followed with a goal when Danny Cahalane drilled a low shot to the back of the Kilgarvan net. Soon after, Danny added another point for the home team. Sean Gleeson landed a free for Kilgarvan but with 6 minutes left in the half Danny Cahalane struck for Templenoe’s second goal. Templenoe carried on dominating and tacked on three points through Patrick Palmer and Brian Crowley before half time.

The second half opened with a free from Patrick Palmer inside two minutes. Kilgarvan’s Paul Gleeson from full forward replied with two fine points. Templenoe again responded through points from Brian Crowley and Timmy O Sullivan which was followed by a good move which resulted in Timmy O Sullivan hitting the roof of the net. Kilgarvan never stopped trying and were luck to see a few goal chances thwarted. However Templenoe pressed on with Denis O Neill, John Spillane, Patrick Palmer, Tadhg Morley and Timmy O Sullivan all on target. Paul Gleeson landed a late free to close out the game on a final score of Templenoe 3-17, Kilgarvan 0-04.

After the game the Kenmare District Board Chairman PJ McIntyre presented the Den Finnegan Cup to Templenoe captain Shane Cremin and Vice-Captain Anthony Sheehan. PJ presented an award to the referee Eddie Walsh of Rathmore and to John Spillane as man of the match. He also thanked the sponsors of the competition Kenmare Co-Op Mart and to Templenoe GAA for the use of their field.
