Credit Union County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 5.
John Mitchels 1-09, Templenoe 1-09
An injury time point from Sean Sheehan salvaged a draw for Templenoe away to John Mitchels last Sunday.
The match was played in showery weather conditions with a cross field breeze in play, which kept the linesman busy throughout the game. Templenoe’s John Rice and Daniel Crowley traded points with Darragh Cunnane and Shane O’Connor to open the scoring and leave the sides level at two points apiece after five minutes of play. Then a well worked move from Templenoe saw Brian Crowley advance on goal and he executed his shot to the far corner of the net giving Mitchels keeper Sean Broderick no chance. The hosts replied promptly with a white flag from Alan O’Donoghue before Cian Holden got inside the Templenoe defence for a goal of their own, this made the score John Mitchels 1-03, Templenoe 1-02 at the end of the first quarter.Buoyed by their goal, John Mitchels tagged on two more quick points through Alan O’Donoghue (f) and Conor Hurley to extend their lead to three points. Templenoe’s shooting for much of the first half was letting them down, but they did have the final say of the half with Colin Crowley splitting the posts from play.
Half Time Score: John Mitchels 1-05, Templenoe 1-03
Templenoe outscored their opponents by four points to one in the third quarter, courtesy of points from Gavin Crowley, Brian Crowley and not to be outdone by Colin Crowley with two converted frees, while Mitchels sole score in that period came from the boot of Cian Holden. This made it 1-06 to 1-07 in favour of the visitors with 43 minutes on the clock. It all made for an exciting last quarter with both teams giving it their all in a battle for two valuable county league points. Two points from Mitchels corner forward Mikey Kelleher either side of another pointed free from Colin Crowley had the sides level at 1-08 apiece with just four minutes of normal time remaining. Then it looked like the hosts might snatch a win when Mikey Kelleher found the range again for his third point to put them ahead by the minimum. Templenoe were fast running out of time, but then with the game two minutes into injury time Sean Sheehan used his experience well to pop over the equalizer from close range after the Mitchels defence had failed to clear their lines from the previous Templenoe attack.
