Garvey's SuperValu County Senior Football Championship Match Report, Templenoe V South Kerry
Garvey’s County Senior Football Championship, Group 1, Round 2.
Templenoe 0-10, South Kerry 1-06.
Templenoe have progressed to the county championship quarter-final for the fourth year in a row after coming out the right side of yet another tight contest, with Killian Spillane nailing a late free to win the game just as he did the previous weekend against West Kerry.
The game was played in dreadful conditions, but there was still a good crowd in attendance, among them was none other than the President of the GAA Larry McCarthy. Templenoe with a strong breeze behind them raced into three points lead courtesy of points from Killian Spillane, Colin Crowley and Aidan Crowley. Then against the run of pay, a fine team move up the field by South Kerry ended with Fionan Clifford finishing brilliantly to the net. Templenoe regrouped and continued to dominate with Killian Spillane adding another score soon after, but despite having the elements in their favour they failed to convert their next three chances. Jack Clifford and Fionan O’Sullivan traded points with Colin Crowley (2) both of which were beautifully struck long range scores before the break. In between Colin Crowley also came close to setting up a goal for the home side, but it didn’t quite come off with his hand pass across the goal going wide of the posts.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-06, South Kerry 1-03.
The wind was not quite as strong for the second half, with the lead changing hands twice in the third quarter. Killian Spillane edged Templenoe ahead with a pointed free, but South Kerry responded with Keith Brennan and Fionan O’Sullivan who might have had a goal splitting the posts to put them one point to the good. Killian Spillane converted another placed ball to make the score 0-08 to 1-05 before the game enter a period of stalemate. Indeed, it would take another 15 minutes before the next white flag was raised with Brian Crowley finding the range for Templenoe as the game entered the final stretch. South Kerry who like Templenoe in the first half were guilty of squandering a few chances in the second did equalize one last time with Ian O’Sullivan popping the ball over the bar to set up a tense last few minutes. With injury time fast approaching, Templenoe had the chance to retake the lead with a free after Stephen O’Sullivan was fouled and Killian Spillane duly obliged. There were a few minutes of injury time played, but Templenoe held on for another great victory to reach the last eight of the competition for the fourth consecutive year.
Well done to all our players and management.
