Templenoe 1-16, St Michaels / Foilmoe 1-03

Templenoe ran out comfortable winners after they hosted St Michaels/Foilmore in round 2 of the South Kerry league last Sunday.

The game was played in wet conditions and both sides were slow to settle, with numerous possessions been coughed up in the early stages. Templenoe soon started to get on top around midfield and in the 6th minute they got off the mark with a pointed free from Cian Hallissey from the right wing. More scores followed for the home side with Cian Hallissey adding two more points (one free) to his tally, while Brian Crowley made no mistake with two frees from the left side.  St Michaels/Foilmore had to wait until the 24th of the match to register their first score, when their midfielder DJ Moran landed a 45 over the bar. The remaining minutes of the half saw Luke O’Shea convert a close in free for the visitors, before Brian Crowley (free) and John Rice restored the lead to five points for Templenoe.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-7, St Michaels/Foilmore 0-2

Templenoe hit the ground running in the second half with Danny Cahalane cutting through the defence for well taken score. St Michaels/Foilmore responded with a pointed free from DJ Moran. However, it was then when the home side really started to ramp up the scoring with John Rice, Cian Hallissey, Danny Cahalane (twice) and Brian Crowley all hitting the target to put Templenoe ten points ahead with 9 minutes remaining. Soon after veteran Shane Cremin who came in as sub, did well to finish the ball to the net after a long ball in from John Spillane for the game’s first goal. Stephen O’Sullivan (0-2) and John Spillane both raised white flags for Templenoe in the closing minutes, while St Michaels/Foilmore got in for consolation goal through Luke O’Shea.

Templenoe 2-11, Kerins O’Rahillys 1-16

Kerins O’Rahillys proved to be too strong for Templenoe in the first round County Senior Football League match played on a dry afternoon in Templenoe GAA Grounds. Both teams were missing players due to injuries and County duties, but there was still plenty of quality on display.

Templenoe were very quick off the mark with a Stephen O’Sullivan point from their first attack, but this was cancelled out by a Tommy Walsh pointed free. The Tralee side added another brace of points, again scored by Tommy Walsh, before a Cian Hallissey point was followed by a well worked Templenoe goal. Teddy Doyle fed in a great foot pass to Cian Hallissey who returned the ball to Teddy who finished to the net.

Kerins O’Rahillys again responded with another Tommy Walsh pointed free and a point from Gavin O’Brien. Killian Spillane kicked a point from play before Cian Hallissey got Templenoe’s second goal when he finished off a quick Templenoe attack to the net. This left the score on the 15th minute mark, Templenoe 2-03, Kerins O’Rahillys 0-05.

The visitors did not let the goals deter them and Gearoid Savage kicked the next three points. Templenoe went ten minutes without a score until Brian Crowley pointed from play. Both teams swapped a point each before the interval leaving a half time score, Templenoe 2-05, Kerins O’Rahillys 0-09

The first ten minutes of the second half witnessed a great period of play for Kerins O’Rahillys and the scored a goal and two points without reply. The goal coming from a Tommy Walsh penalty. Cian Hallissey was the first Templenoe scorer with a point from play. Templenoe then started to enjoy a purple patch, and scores from Brian Crowley (2) and John Spillane saw the side’s level with ten minutes remaining. The match was being played at a great intensity at this stage. Both teams again swapped scores, but two frees scored by Tommy Walsh for Kerins O’Rahillys with five minutes remaining saw a gap emerge. John Spillane scored his second point of the day, but this was cancelled out by another Tommy Walsh free which proved to be the last score of the match.

Legion 1-13, Templenoe 1-17.

Templenoe gained their first two points in the County league after a four point win away to Legion, in what was a very entertaining game last Sunday.

The match was played in ideal conditions and it was Templenoe that raced into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after 6 minutes. Stephen O’Sullivan opened the scoring, before Pat Spillane struck a low shot to the net following a great solo run towards the goal. Brian Crowley added a second point to give the visitors a dream start. Shortly after, Conor Keane showed good determination to register Legion’s first score. Templenoe maintained control though, with their quick and direct play seeing them go on to earn the next four points in a row thanks to Cian Hallissey (free), Patrick Clifford with a fisted effort, Teddy Doyle (long range free), and Pat Spillane from play. This put Templenoe in a commanding position at the end of the first quarter as they lead by 1-6 to 0-2. Both Keepers Anthony Sheehan and Conor McCarthy were called upon to make great saves from Conor Keane and Stephen O’Sullivan respectively during the course of the first half. Jamie O’Sullivan (free) and Stephen O’Sullivan traded scores, before it was Legion’s turn to hit a purple patch getting five unanswered points through the boots of their danger men Jamie O’Sullivan (0-4) and Conor Keane (0-1). Templenoe responded with Pat Spillane once again splitting the posts, before Jamie O’Sullivan slotted over another free for the Killarney men following a foul on Padraig Lucey. This ensured the game was still all to play as the first half drew to a close.

Half Time Score: Legion 0-9, Templenoe 1-8.

Templenoe also started the second half brightly with Brian Crowley and Teddy Doyle reasserting the visitors position with the first two scores following well worked moves. Jamie O’Sullivan meanwhile continued his exhibition at the frees as he popped over Legion’s opening score of the half, before John Spillane and Brian Crowley (0-2) both showed good composure to consolidate Templenoe’s lead once more. However, Legion then started to get a grip on proceeding again with Jamie O’Sullivan adding two more points (0-1f) to his tally either side of a goal from Conor Keane, who made no mistake after he found an opening in the Templenoe defence after Legion forced a turnover. This made the score 1-12 to 1-13 at the end of the third quarter and the game was now on a knife edge. Cian Hallissey (free) and Pat Spillane helped steady the ship for the away side with two crucial scores, but Legion replied with a pointed free from Jamie O’Sullivan to keep the contest in the balance. Legion were almost in for another score only for vital interception from Patrick Clifford. Soon after Templenoe got the ball into Stephen O’Sullivan who worked very hard all through to earn a free, this was duly converted by Brian Crowley to put a bit more daylight between the sides. However, Legion refused to throw in the towel and they had one last frantic move up the field, which also saw Cian Hallissey receive a black card for Templenoe. At the end of this attack, Legion were awarded a free about 20 yards from goal and up stepped Jamie O’Sullivan who hit a blistering shot only to see it rocket against the crossbar. Templenoe then regained position of the ball and lifted the siege with substitute Martin Reilly taking advantage of the Legion defence been caught out of position, to win one last free in for Brian Crowley to thump over.

Final Score: Legion 1-13, Templenoe 1-17

Templenoe 1-8 Dromid Pearses 1-13

Dromid Pearses proved too good for Templenoe in the final of the South Kerry league played in Sneem, on a bitterly cold afternoon last Saturday.

Dromid Pearses opened the scoring inside the 2nd minute with a pointed free from Niall O’Shea. Templenoe’s response was emphatic with a well worked move involving Sean Moriarty and Pat Spillane to put through Stephen O’Sullivan, who finished the ball to the net from close range. Then shortly after the same player Stephen O’Sullivan converted a free to extend their advantage. However, Dromid Pearses hit back with the next three scores in a row, the first of which was a goal from Midfielder Niall O’Connor after a good ball in from Shane O’Connor. The other two scores came courtesy of a pointed free from Chris Farley and a Dilan O’Donoghue effort from play, to put Dromid ahead by 1-3 to 1-1 after 14 minutes. Brian Crowley (free) and Dilan O’Donoghue exchanged scores, before a superb long range effort from John Rice brought Templenoe back to within a point. The last ten minutes of the half were very competitive, with Pat Spillane, Stephen O’Sullivan (free) and Danny Cahalane trading scores with Chris Farley (free) and Niall O’Shea (free) to leave matters all square at the interval:

Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-6, Dromid Pearses 1-6.

Dromid Pearses quickly opened up a two point lead in the second half, with scores from Chris Farley (free) and Thomas Curran. Brian Crowley replied with a pointed free for Templenoe, but from there on it was all Dromid Pearses as they went on to hit the next four scores in a row. Chris Farley continued his unerring accuracy from frees, by popping over two more points, while Dilan O’Donoghue added another score from play, before Gearoid J O’Sullivan did well to get inside the Templenoe defence to fist the ball over the bar. This put Dromid Pearses ahead by 1-12 to 1-7 after 28 minutes. Templenoe tried hard to set up goal scoring opportunities, but they could find no way through a resolute Dromid defence and ultimately they had to settle for just two points in the second half, with Pat Spillane getting their second and last score of this period. Gearoid J O’Sullivan rounded off proceedings with a well taken point for Dromid Pearses, after which the final whistle sounded.

Final Score Templenoe 1-8, Dromid Pearses 1-13.

Templenoe 0-20, Currow 2-6

Templenoe got their Intermediate Championship campaign off to a solid start, although they do have some improving to do after they overcame Currow at a cold and wet Fitzgerald Stadium, last Sunday.

Templenoe who welcomed back the services of county panellists Tadgh Morley, Adrian and Killian Spillane dominated the play from the start and went ahead by 0-6 to 0-0 inside the first 10 minutes. This was despite Templenoe playing against the wind in the first half. The scores came from Killian Spillane (2), Teddy Doyle (a 45), Patrick Clifford with a fisted effort, Brian Crowley from off the outside of his right boot before a neat score from Cian Hallissey put the Kenmare District side in a strong position. Then a long ball in from Currow was gathered by John Buckley who passed the ball across the goal to the in rushing Daniel O’Shea who rose above Templenoe Keeper Anthony Sheehan to fist the ball to the net. Shortly after, John Buckley followed this up with a score of his own to put just two points between the sides. Templenoe responded with Teddy Doyle and Stephen O’Sullivan both splitting the posts, which Currow answered with point from play through Pa McCarthy. This made the score 0-8 to 1-2 after 17 minutes. Templenoe were almost in for a goal when Stephen O’Sullivan was put through by Danny Cahalane, but his effort was well blocked. John Spillane traded scores with Currow’s wing back Seamus Brosnan, before Cian Hallissey had another pointed free for last year’s finalists. The remaining minutes saw a goal bound shot from Pat Spillane saved by Currow Keeper Shane O’Leary, before Mike McCarthy landed a 45 over the bar to bring the half to a close.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-10, Currow 1-4.

Both sides had a slow start to the second half with numerous possessions been coughed up. Indeed Templenoe hit 3 of their 13 wides in this time, before they finally registered their first score of the second half after 9 minutes courtesy of Brian Crowley. Currow however were determined to stay in touch and John Buckley was on hand to get a second goal from close range for the St Kierans men, after another long ball in. Suddenly, there was just point in it but Templenoe kept their composure with Killian Spillane adding a few more points (0-1f) either side of a pointed free from Mike McCarthy. Then a great turnover from Teddy Doyle enabled Adrian Spillane to get his first of two consecutive points to put Templenoe ahead by 0-16 to 2-5 after 19 minutes. The last 10 minutes of the half saw Templenoe tag on 4 more unanswered points through Cian Hallissey (2) along with Killian Spillane and Brian Crowley to kill off the Currow challenge.
