Dr Crokes 2-13, Templenoe 3-8.

This round 4 county league tie was played in Lewis Road on a fine summer’s evening last Saturday. A gallant Templenoe pushed Dr Crokes all the way and were unlucky to come up two points short in the end.

Templenoe opened the scoring thanks to an effort from Brian Crowley inside the first minute, to which Dr Crokes responded with a point from Alan O’Sullivan. Then Templenoe rocked the Killarney side with 2 goals in quick succession. The first came from Martin Reilly after a superb interception from John Spillane helped pave the way, while the second was finished to the net by Stephen O’Sullivan, who showed great awareness to win possession from a short kick out by the Crokes. The next 10 minutes saw Dr Crokes tag on two unanswered points from Brian Looney and Colm Cooper (free), but Templenoe hit back with one of their own through Stephen O’Sullivan to make the score 0-3 to 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. Dr Crokes got in for their first goal in the 19th minute, when Michael Potts fired home from close range. Then Pat Spillane and Brian Crowley exchanged scores with Colm Cooper (free) and Tony Brosnan, before points from Gavin O’Shea and Colm Cooper (free) brought the scores back to level terms just before the interval. In between Templenoe lost Sean Sheehan to a black card.

Half Time Score: Dr Crokes 1-7, Templenoe 2-4.

Dr Crokes had a bright opening to the second half with three unanswered points from veteran Eoin Brosnan, Alan O’Sullivan and David Shaw. Crokes also almost had goal in this time from Alan O’Sullivan, but his effort struck the crossbar. Templenoe replied with another long range point from Pat Spillane, before Brian Crowley slotted over a free following a foul on Patrick Clifford. Then in the 44th minute, Tony Brosnan restored Crokes lead to two points with a well taken score. Templenoe upped the ante again minutes later with Pat Spillane popping over his third point, before Stephen O’Sullivan put Brian Crowley through one on one with the keeper and Brian Crowley made no mistake with the finish to make the score 1-11 to 3-7 with just 9 minutes remaining. However Crokes don’t do panic and they recycled the ball well to set Brian Looney up for a point to reduce the margin to the minimum. Then a minute later a precision pass from Alan O’Sullivan to substitute Jordan Kiely who gathered the ball near the left corner, before bearing down on goal to dispatch the ball to the net. This gave Dr Crokes a two point cushion and Gavin O’Shea extended their lead to three with a fisted effort, before John Spillane got a consolation score for Templenoe.

Division 1, County Senior Football League, Round 5.

Templenoe 2-15, Rathmore 1-12.

Templenoe earned their second win in the county league after overcoming Rathmore by six points in a sun drenched Templenoe last Saturday evening.

The visitors almost got off to the ideal start, but Anthony Sheehan did well to save a goal bound effort from John Moynihan. Then Cian Hallissey and Mark Reen traded scores, before two frees on the trot from county panellist Killian Spillane gave the home side a two point advantage. A minute later, good lead up play by Teddy Doyle who released the ball to Brian Crowley ended with Doyle on hand to palm the ball to the net, after Crowley’s effort was blocked by the keeper. Strangely, Templenoe would not score again until just before the interval, as the East Kerry side starting gaining a grip on proceedings, especially around the middle of the field. Their period of dominance started with a goal from John Moynihan who cut in from the left corner to put the ball passed Anthony Sheehan. This made the score 1-3 to 1-1 at the end of the first quarter. Rathmore went on to follow this up with the next six points in a row courtesy of Shane Ryan, John Moynihan, Mark Reen and Dean Fitzgerald, while Eoin Lawlor and Donal O’Sullivan also got their names on the score sheet. Then the Templenoe forwards finally got their hands on some ball again and scores from Teddy Doyle and Brian Crowley brought them back to within two points at the end of the first half.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-5, Rathmore 1-7.

Templenoe had the aid of a slight breeze for the second half, but more importantly they also upped their performance. Three unanswered points from Stephen O’Sullivan, Teddy Doyle (free) and Pat Spillane preceded a second goal for Templenoe through Stephen O’Sullivan. This put the home side ahead by 2-8 to 1-7 after 36 minutes of play. Rathmore replied with scores from Shane Ryan (2) and Mark Reen, either side of a pointed free from Killian Spillane. Pat Spillane added a classic point for Templenoe, but Rathmore hit back with a score of their own from substitute Chrissy Spiers. This left just two points between the sides with seven minutes remaining. Cian Hallissey slotted over a crucial free from the right side, before another point from Stephen O’Sullivan put some more daylight between the sides. Then Teddy Doyle nailed a brilliant free from more than 45 yards out and Templenoe followed this up with a Killian Spillane effort from a placed ball. Rathmore did have one score from Shane Ryan (free) and they tried hard right to the end, but Templenoe had the final say in the contest with a wonderful point from play through Killian Spillane.

East Region U16 League Final Result:

Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane 4-12, Beaufort 2-09.

Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane had a great victory over Beaufort in the Division 6 East Region U16 League Final. They started off brightly scoring the opening point of the match, but Beaufort proved to be the better team through the first half. They created numerous goal chances but crucially only converted one of them. Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane gamely hung on and went in at half time trailing on a scoreline of Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane 0-05, Beaufort 1-05.

Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane started to come more into the match in the 2nd half but everything changed on the 45th minute when they scored two goals within a minute to turn a three point deficit into a three point advantage. Beaufort responded with a point but possibly the most important moment was a goalmouth scramble which saw the ball saved off the Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane line. Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane’s lead was further extended with a goal on the 52nd minute to make the match safe and they added a fourth goal in injury time.

This was a very sporting match by both teams and commiserations to Beaufort who played well throughout. There was plenty of outstanding displays for the victors, but a special mention must go to the Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane full back line who gave a great display of defending. A highlight of the match was some of the high quality block downs on Beaufort point attempts in the second half.

Ciarán O’Sullivan accepted the trophy as team captain. Well done to all involved, including the management of, Brendan O’Sullivan, Michael O’Sullivan, Paddy O’Brien and Eddie O’Sullivan

Division 1, County Senior Football League, Round 6.

Spa 2-10, Templenoe 0-17.

Templenoe gained another two valuable points in the County league after they saw off Spa, to end the Killarney’s side’s impressive 100% record in the competition. This was a very entertaining game played in glorious weather at Spa last Saturday evening.

Templenoe had a bright opening to the contest with Brian Crowley and Killian Spillane (free) both hitting the target to open the scoring. However, Spa soon settled and replied in splendid fashion to score 1-4 on the trot. Michael O’Donoghue got their purple patch underway with a pointed free and Spa followed this up with two points from Evan Cronin either side of a David Spillane effort. Then came their first goal after good play from Evan Cronin to combine with Ryan O’Carroll who made no mistake to put the home side ahead by 1-4 to 0-2 after 10 minutes. To their credit Templenoe regrouped quickly and responded admirably to strike five unanswered points. The first of these scores came from Stephen O’Sullivan, before two from Brian Crowley and one each from Killian Spillane and Cian Hallissey (free) brought the visitors back to level terms. The remaining minutes of the half were ebb and flow. Spa restored a two point’s advantage courtesy of Evan Cronin and Michael O’Donoghue, but Templenoe pegged them back through Killian Spillane and Teddy Doyle with the first of his three 45s, after a shot at goal by Stephen O’Sullivan was well saved by Spa Keeper James Devane. This left matters all square at the interval.

Half Time Score: Spa 1-6, Templenoe 0-9.

With the game all to play in the second half, Spa and Templenoe remained even after 38 minutes with Pat Spillane and Michael O’Donoghue trading scores. Then Templenoe opened up a three point’s gap thanks to Pat Spillane with another one of his trade mark long range points, before Teddy Doyle converted his second 45 and then captain Brian Crowley despite been closely watched by the Spa defence added to his tally. Spa hit back with a free from Evan Cronin, but Templenoe went on to consolidate their position with a placed ball effort from Cian Hallissey, before Killian Spillane who was vigilant to a short kick out from Spa duly won possession before popping over another point. This made the score 1-8 to 0-15 after 51 minutes of play. A minute later the match was put on a knife edge once again, after a break away Spa attack saw Ryan O’Carroll get in behind the Templenoe defence to clinically despatch the ball to the net. With just the minimum between the sides coming into the closing stages, Templenoe found another gear to earn two more points from Killian Spillane (free) and Teddy Doyle to complete his exhibition from 45’s. This put Templenoe in a strong position, but Spa kept fighting and two pointed frees from Michael O’Donoghue in injury time brought them back to within one point of Templenoe again. However, Templenoe had enough in the tank to hold on for a deserved win.

Final Score: Spa 2-10, Templenoe 0-17

Spa: Ryan O’Carroll 2-0, Michael O’Donoghue 0-5 (0-4f), Evan Cronin 0-4 (0-1f), David Spillane 0-1.
