Match Reports 2019

Templenoe 5-12, St Saviours (Waterford) 2-09.

Six months on from winning the Club’s first County Intermediate football title, Templenoe welcomed St Saviours (Waterford) to our GAA Grounds for the Quarter Final of the Munster Intermediate Club Championship last Saturday afternoon. It was another proud day for Templenoe, who also greeted the return of the Kerry quartet for this eagerly awaited fixture.

The match was played in wet, cold and wintery conditions and it was Templenoe who had the aid of the strong breeze for the first half. Stephen O’Sullivan opened the scoring in the second minute of the game, when he hand passed the ball over the bar, after he was put through by Gavin Crowley. Killian Spillane added a second score, before St Saviours opened their account with a well taken point from Darragh Corcorcan. The latter then levelled matters with a pointed free, but then a long range effort from Brian Crowley ended up in net, after the Saviours keeper appeared to misjudge the flight of the ball for Templenoe’s first goal. Further scores followed from Josh Crowley Holland, Killian Spillane and Brian Crowley before Derek Corcoran hit back with two pointed frees on the trot for the Waterford side. St Saviours were giving Templenoe enough of it at this stage and then the game was blown open, when the visitors were awarded a penalty after Templenoe goalie Danny Cahalane fouled Joseph Phelan inside the square. The referee issued a black card to Danny Cahalane and his replacement Cathal Granville stood no chance of stopping the resultant spot kick that was perfectly converted by Joseph Phelan. This made the score 1-05 to 1-04 after 18 minutes of play. However, Templenoe quickly regrouped and responded emphatically to this setback to score 2-03 without reply in the remaining 12 minutes of the first half. Teddy Doyle latched onto a short kick out from St Saviours, before pulling on the ball to take it past Brian Power for the home side’s second goal. Then five minutes later, Stephen O’Sullivan combined with Cian Hallissey, with the former dispatching the ball to the net for Templenoe’s third goal to give them a 10 points cushion at the break.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 3-08, St Saviours 1-04.

Templenoe extended their lead with two more unanswered points inside the first 3 minutes of the second half courtesy of Killian Spillane and Stephen O’Sullivan. Soon after Templenoe manufactured their fourth goal, in a great team move that ended with Josh Crowley Holland setting up Brian Crowley who made no mistake with the finish. Both sides traded a few wides, before St Saviours eventually registered their next scores with Jack Flavin and David Griffin splitting the posts to make it 4-10 to 1-06 with 46 minutes on the clock. Templenoe though refused to allow their opponents back into the game and consolidated their position once more, when Killian Spillane delivered a lovely kick pass to Brian Crowley, who in turn buried the ball to the net to complete his hat trick. The home side followed up their fifth goal of the contest, with Pat Spillane slotting over two points in a row. In fairness to St Saviours they fought to the end and points from Shaun Corcorcan, Michael Merrigan (2), preceded their second goal, which came in injury time from Darragh Corcoran, after he turned over possession to reduce the margin to 12 points by the final whistle.

Templenoe now go on to meet Eire Og of Cork in the Munster Intermediate Semi Final, after a solid display overall, although their shooting did leave them down at times with a total of 12 wides. The Munster Intermediate Semi Final is fixed for Ovens at 1:30pm next Sunday, 17th November and we wish the Templenoe team and management the very best of luck!

AIB Munster Club Intermediate Football Championship Semi-Final.

Éire Óg (Cork) 0-12, Templenoe 1-17.

Templenoe have qualified for the Munster Club Intermediate Football Final, following a powerful display that saw them overcome Éire Óg with eight points to spare at Ovens last Sunday. The game was played before a large attendance of 1,777 people on a dry, but chilly afternoon.

Templenoe went into this fixture in the luxury position of having a full panel to pick from and they certainly didn’t disappoint. The visitors chose to play with the strong breeze for the first half and they used their wind advantage superbly. Templenoe immediately laid down a marker, with the lively Stephen O’Sullivan opening the scoring with just 30 seconds played, after he combined with Brian Crowley. Éire Óg replied with their county star Ronan O’Toole showing good determination along the end line to get past the Templenoe defence to level the scoring. However, it would take Éire Óg another 18 minutes before they would add to their tally, with Ronan O’Toole again the provider. In between, it was all Templenoe whose midfield dominance, slick ball movement, clinical finishing and excellent tracking/defending (forcing countless turnovers) saw them hit seven unanswered points courtesy of Stephen O’Sullivan (3), Gavin Crowley, Cian Hallissey and Killian Spillane (2) to make the score 0-02 to 0-08 after 19 minutes of play. Things would not get any better for the Mid Cork side before the break, as they continued to struggle for scores. Templenoe meanwhile drove on with confidence and energy to tag on four more points before the interval, with Tadhg Morley and Teddy Doyle adding their names to the score sheet alongside Killian Spillane and Stephen O’Sullivan. Another noteworthy stat perhaps, is that Templenoe only hit one wide in the first half.

Half Time Score: Éire Óg 0-02, Templenoe 0-12.

Éire Óg introduced their U20 All Ireland medal winner Colm O’Callaghan for the second half, with injury depriving him of a starting place and although he did make an impact, a comeback by the home side never really looked likely. Killian Spillane added two points either side of a fine score from Éire Óg’s Eoin O’Shea to extend Templenoe’s lead to eleven points. But then in the ensuing passages of play the Mid Cork side hit somewhat of a purple patch to outscore Templenoe by four points to one to make the score 0-07 to 0-15 by the 47th minute, with Ciarán Sheehan, Brian Hurley and Daniel Goulding (2) all finding their range. Sandwiched in between was yet another point from Stephen O’Sullivan, who almost goaled after a good ball across the square from Josh Crowley Holland. Killian Spillane and Daniel Goulding traded frees before Adrian Spillane did brilliant to break the ball from the Éire Óg defenders following a speculative pass from his brother Killian to dispatch the ball to the back of the net, for the game’s only green flag. This killed off any faint hopes of an Éire Óg revival, with the visitors restoring the gap to eleven points. The closing minutes of the game saw Templenoe grab one score through Pat Spillane, while Éire Óg had to settle for four consolation scores from Colm O’Callaghan and Daniel Goulding (3), before Referee Alan Kissane blew the full time whistle.

Templenoe will be meeting St Breckans of Clare in Munster Club Intermediate Final, after they overcame Moycarkey-Borris (Tipperary) in the other Semi Final. The final is due to be played on the 1st of December at a venue to be confirmed.

All in all it was a fantastic result for Templenoe, on a memorable weekend for the Club. Well done to all involved and best of luck in the Munster Intermediate Final.

AIB Munster Club Intermediate Football Championship Final.

Templenoe 0-14, St Breckans (Clare) 0-05.

Templenoe brought down the curtain on what has been a glorious decade for the Club with a hard earned nine points victory over St Breckans in the Munster Club Intermediate football final at Mallow last Sunday. It was another historic day for the Club who have embarked on an extraordinary journey since 2010. Templenoe have gone from winning the Novice Shield that year, to capturing the Novice Championship in 2013, before adding the County, Munster and All Ireland Junior club Championship titles in 2015/16 to the club’s roll of honour. Then last May the long sought after County Intermediate Championship was finally won and last Sunday Templenoe were crowned Munster Club Intermediate football champions.

Templenoe did not quite repeat the five star display they produced against Éire Óg in the Munster Semi Final, but they used their experience well and showed good patience and composure as the game went on to overcome a dogged St Breckans side. The game was played in ideal conditions for the time of year and both teams brought plenty of support. Templenoe opened the scoring with midfielder Sean Sheehan popping the ball over the bar after he was played through by Teddy Doyle. But from early on it was clear Templenoe would not have everything their own way against a very organised St Breckans, who were getting lots of bodies back and making life difficult for the opponents attack. Padraig Kelly levelled the scores for St Breckans with a placed ball effort, before Stephen Tierney put the Clare side ahead for the first and only time in the game. Soon after the Banner Countymen were dealt a blow, when they lost their wing forward Maccon Bryne to a black card. Templenoe though were struggling for scores during this spell, which was not helped by them kicking 5 wides in the first half. It would take until the 19th minute before Templenoe would eventually register their second score of the match courtesy of Killian Spillane, following a good team move which started all the way back from goalkeeper Danny Cahalane. This made the score 2 points apiece. Then two points on the trot from Stephen O’Sullivan, one from a free and one from open play, helped steady the ship for the Kerry side after a turbulent opening 20 minutes. Shortly before the break, Brian Crowley somehow managed to swing the ball over the bar to extend Templenoe’s lead to three points, despite been put under strong pressure from the Breckans defence. The side representing Lisdoonvarna and Doolin had the final say in the half with centre forward Padraig Kelly nailing a 45 to reduce the deficit back to two points.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-05, St Breckans 0-03.

Templenoe had the perfect start to the second half with Adrian Spillane splitting the posts from throw in, after he soloed through the Breckans defence. Then St Breckans missed a gilt edge chance to blow the game wide open, when Colm O’Brien looked to be through on goal only to pull his shot low and wide of the posts. Templenoe’s Stephen O’Sullivan and Killian Spillane traded frees with St Breckans Aidan Davidson (2) to make score 0-08 to 0-05 after 41 minutes. But then the Clare side suffered a big setback, when Liam Tierney picked up a second yellow to reduce St Breckans to 14 men and a minute later things got even worse for them, when Breckans lost their impressive long range free taker Padraig Kelly to a black card. Templenoe were now beginning to find space and were determined to make the numerical advantage count. Patrick Clifford ventured up from defence to extend Templenoe’s lead to four points, before two of Templenoe’s inter-county stars Adrian Spillane and Gavin Crowley combined, with the former grabbing his second point of the game. Cian Hallissey was next to write his name on the scoresheet and then Stephen O’Sullivan inflicted further misery on St Breckans when he dispossessed his marker to fire the ball over the bar. This made the score 0-12 to 0-04 with nine minutes remaining. To their credit, St Breckans kept fighting and tried hard to manufacture a goal, with a high ball in from Aidan Davidson to their full forward Joseph McGann, but the Templenoe defence were rock solid and they cleared the ball to safety. Templenoe completed their shift with Stephen O’Sullivan slotting over two more points, before referee John Ryan blew the full time whistle.

Templenoe have now won two Munster titles in five years, which is an outstanding achievement for small Club. Congratulations to all the players, management and backroom team, who have all been putting in a tremendous amount of work since late last year. Attention will now turn to the weekend of the 11th January, when Templenoe will take on Oughterard of Galway to battle it out for a place in the All Ireland Club Intermediate Football Final. We wish all our players and management the very best with the preparations in the weeks ahead.
