Garvey’s SuperValu 2020 County Senior Football Club Championship, Round 1

Dingle 1-12, Templenoe 3-07.

It was an evening that will live long in the memory of all Templenoe GAA Club members and supporters following a breathtaking win by our Senior team over match favourites Dingle in their own backyard on our debut year in the county senior championship. While it was very disappointing no spectators could attend this game due to the Covid-19 restrictions, there is no doubting how much this win meant to the Club. The draw for the next round of the County Championship will be awaited with great interest by all in Templenoe.

The match was played in wet and rainy conditions with Templenoe having a slight breeze advantage for the first half. The visitors got off to a perfect start with Brian Crowley opening the scoring inside the first minute. Dingle countered with an effort from Dylan Geaney, but it was Templenoe who dominated the possession early on and they had two successive wides, before Killian Spillane restored their one point lead. Five minutes later Conor Geaney pointed for the hosts and then the game took a turn in their favour when a ball across the Templenoe goal from Tom O’Sullivan ended with a superb strike to the net from Matthew Flaherty. Templenoe though refused this let this unsettle them and got a valuable point through Stephen O’Sullivan ahead of the first half water break to make the score 1-02 to 0-03.

On resumption, Dingle had a wide from play, before Killian Spillane slotted over two points on the trot -one from play and one from free to bring the contest back level. Then came the first goal for Templenoe - when Adrian Spillane passed the ball to Teddy Doyle who soloed towards the goal and despite been put under strong pressure from the Dingle defence, he somehow managed to get a shot in to gift Templenoe a three points lead. Tom O’Sullivan hit back with a point for Dingle, but they also suffered a setback in this period, when they lost Michael Geaney to injury. However, for Templenoe it was a case of onwards and upwards and soon after they rocked Dingle with another goal, after a high ball in from Sean Sheehan broke kindly for Killian Spillane who finished brilliantly to open up a five points lead for Templenoe. Dingle knew they had fight on their hands now, but they did cut the margin back to three with points from Conor Geaney and David O’Connor (45) before the interval. In between Templenoe keeper Mark Looney made a great and important save from Tom Leo O’Sullivan.

The second half was only three minutes old when Brian Crowley cut through the Dingle defence before releasing the ball to the unmarked Josh Crowley Holland, who finished the ball to the net from the edge of the square. This increased the visitors lead to six points with the Templenoe faithful watching on in live stream now daring to dream of a famous win. However, there was still a long way to go and there was no chance of Dingle rolling over. True to form the hosts replied with four unanswered points courtesy of George Durrant, Conor Geaney (2) and Dylan Geaney to reduce the margin to two points. Killian Spillane briefly settled Templenoe’s nerves with a pointed free, but Dingle were coming back strong. In the ensuing passages of play they tagged on two more points from Conor Geaney and Tom O’Sullivan ahead of the second half water break to make the score 1-11 to 3-06.

The game was now set for a grand stand finish, but Templenoe’s concerns were increasing when the inspirational Adrian Spillane had to retire through injury ahead of the final quarter. When play resumed Dingle were off target with two attempts either of which would have levelled the contest and potentially provided them with a big psychological advantage going into the closing stages. However, the home side just could not land an equalizer and instead good work by John Rice paved the way for Templenoe’s sharp shooter Killian Spillane to fire over a pivotal point for the visitors. With time fast running out both sides were giving it absolutely everything and a point from Tom O’Sullivan did put the minimum between the sides again. But in contrast to 3 weeks ago against Kenmare, Templenoe were not going to be denied at the death this time and held on for a famous victory with all 17 players that saw game time playing their part. -Not least the lion hearted Gavin Crowley in defence and Tadhg Morley who kept County star Paul Geaney scoreless.

Templenoe are now through to the quarter finals of the county championship, a remarkable and proud achievement for a small club and make no mistake about it, Templenoe are well capable of going further in this competition. Well done to all involved and best of luck with the preparations for the next round, the draw for which takes place this evening (Sunday). Commiserations to Dingle, who will no doubt be back.

Kerins O'Rahillys 3-13, Templenoe 1-11.

Kerins O'Rahillys had 8 points to spare in the end, but for a time in the second half aTemplenoe win looked a very real possibility after they recovered brilliantly from a poor opening 18 minutes trailing the Tralee side by 8 points to draw level by the 49th minute. However, the last 15 minutes saw Kerins O’Rahillys use their experience effectively to comfortably see off the Templenoe challenge. On a glorious evening for football with little or no breeze, Kerins O’Rahillys opened the scoring with corner forward Conor Hayes splitting the posts inside the first minute. Strand Road completely dominated the opening exchanges and they made this count on the scoreboard with Jack Savage (free), Gearoid Savage and Conor Hayes all finding the target to put the Rahillys four points ahead after 7 minutes. Then came the first goal of the game after County Star David Moran won a hop ball close to the Templenoe goal before releasing the ball under pressure to Conor Hayes who dispatched the ball to the net. Gearoid Savage added another point for the hosts before Templenoe finally registered their first score in the 12th minute courtesy of Killian Spillane, who also had a goal chance well saved by Rahillys keeper Gary Kissane 3 minutes earlier. Before the first half water break Gearoid Savage added another point to his tally, to which the visitors replied with a placed ball effort from Colin Crowley to make the score 1-06 to 0-02.

On resumption, Gearoid Savage continued his scoring spree to extend Kerins O’Rahilly lead to 8 points, but the away side who were now beginning to find their stride, hit back with the next four points on the trot through Killian Spillane, Sean Sheehan, Cian Hallissey and Josh Crowley Holland. In between, Templenoe keeper Mark Looney calmly dealt with a dangerous high ball over the top to divert the ball away from the in rushing Jack Savage. Suddenly the margin was reduced to four points and momentum was with Templenoe. Jack Savage did slot over another free for Rahillys, but Templenoe responded with an excellent point from the sideline from Brian Crowley to complete a strong second quarter for Templenoe

Half Time Score: Kerins O'Rahillys 1-08, Templenoe 0-07.

Buoyed by their second quarter purple patch, Templenoe continued to rally and points from Brian Crowley followed by his brother Gavin who ventured up from defence reduced the deficit to two points. Both sides had wides and both teams also made switches with Templenoe introducing Tadhg Morley to mark his return to action following his recent spell on the sidelines through injury. While Kerins O’Rahillys brought in Shane McElligott. Then Colin Crowley swung over a great point despite been off balance as he was kicking to put just the bare minimum between the sides ahead of the second half water break.Templenoe’s great come back was complete when Martin Reilly popped over a point to make the score 1-08 to 0-11 after 49 minutes of play. The game was now in the melting pot and the question was could Templenoe push on and win it. In the 50th minute, Tadhg Morley who was operating in the forwards following his introduction had a shot at goal only to be denied by Gary Kissane. At the other end Jack Savage was wide of the posts with a free, but then made amends immediately after, when Kerins O’Rahillys intercepted a short kick out from Templenoe and Jack Savage found space to slot the ball over the bar for a crucial score. Soon after Kerins O’Rahillys were firmly in the driving seat when a pass across the Templenoe goal was finished to the net by Barry John Keane. The hosts had further points from Jack Savage (free) and Conor Hayes, before one of their substitutes Danny O’Sullivan showed great anticipation to fist home a dropped short point effort to kill off any chances of a second Templenoe revival. The closing minutes saw Brian Crowley rifle a shot from a close in free to the roof of the net for a consolation goal for Templenoe, but Kerins O’Rahillys secure in the knowledge they had avoided a relegation play off completed their scoring with points from Conor Hayes and Sean Walsh. Templenoe will now have to battle out with Kilcummin in a winner takes all clash to decide which Club remains at Senior grade for 2021. But this game is not likely take place for some time yet as it, will be preceded by the County Senior Football Championship.

Kerry Petroleum Senior Football Club Championship, Round 2:

Templenoe 1-11, Kenmare 3-06.

Templenoe and Kenmare served up a pulsating contest last Friday evening that ebbed and flowed and could have gone either way. Indeed a draw would probably have been the fairest outcome, but in the end it was late-late goal from Paul O’Connor that earned Kenmare the win by the narrowest of margins.

It was a historic occasion for Templenoe, with the Club hosting our first ever game at Senior grade. It was also the first meeting between the Templenoe and Kenmare Senior teams since the County Intermediate Final in 2016. The Covid-19 restrictions were once again in place but no doubt about it, everyone lucky enough to have attended the match or viewed the game on-line got their full entertainment value with both sides putting in plenty of hits throughout the match that was every inch a local derby.

Kenmare had the wind to their backs for the first half on an evening that was mostly dry. But Templenoe had the livelier start with Killian Spillane opening the scoring from a free for the first of his eight points. Sean O’Shea almost equalized a minute later, however his effort went wide of the posts. Kenmare though were now settling into the game and then in the 5^th Minute Michael McCarthy put through midfielder Kevin O’Sullivan who was sprinting forward for Kenmare’s first goal, giving keeper Mark Looney no chance. Templenoe replied with another pointed free from Killian Spillane, but worse was to follow for the home side, when Kenmare’s other Midfielder Fionan O’Sullivan got forward to find himself in a bit of space before firing home Kenmare’s second goal. Kenmare went on to consolidate their position with points from Paul O’Connor and Kevin O’Sullivan, to make the score 0-02 to 2-02. Templenoe’s position did not get any better before the first half water break with John Spillane and Danny Cahalane both getting sin binned, while corner back Michael Hallissey had to retire with a shoulder injury.

Templenoe emerged from the first water break in more determined fashion raising their intensity levels to dominate the second quarter. Killian Spillane got a much needed score for the home side following a lovely delivery from Gavin Crowley. Then minutes later Stephen O’Sullivan added another point. Meanwhile, Kenmare had their turn to pick up a black card with Kevin O’Sullivan getting sent ashore for his 10 minute spell on the sideline. In contrast Templenoe were soon restored to their full complement of players on the pitch and then the game really came to life when Gavin Crowley did very well to intercept a ball bound to Kenmare’s dangerman Sean O’Shea, before launching a high ball into the goal that was finished to the net by Adrian Spillane. Dara Crowley hit back with a point for Kenmare before half time, but it was Templenoe who were going into the break re-energised and they could have been in an even stronger position had they not squandered a few chances.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-04, Kenmare 2-03.

There was a small bit of rain during the interval, but this was not going to in anyway take from the game. On resumption, Killian Spillane showed beautiful skill and balance to get around two Kenmare defenders, before planting the ball over the bar to bring Templenoe within a point of their rivals. The contest then took another twist when Sean O’Shea became the fourth player to be sin binned. Templenoe’s Colin Crowley was off target with 45, but Templenoe did equalize in the 36^th minute with Killian Spillane striking over a free with his left boot. Less than a minute later the same player called the mark after receiving a pass from his brother Adrian before popping another ball over the bar, this time with his right leg. Templenoe were now back in front and the home supporters were getting more and more hopeful of a famous victory. However, Kenmare remained focused and Paul O’Connor tied the scores again in the 39^th minute. Further scores were exchanged between Killian Spillane and Paul O’Connor before Sean O’Shea, despite good pressure from the Templenoe defence managed to split the posts after his initial effort was blocked to score his first and only point in the contest. Kenmare carried a slender lead going into the 2^nd half water break 1-08 to 2-06, but unlike Fitzgerald Stadium at the same stage the previous Friday evening, this match was far from over.

Soon after play resumed, Killian Spillane tied the scores again from a placed ball effort to keep the game on a knife edge, before Stephen O’Sullivan pointed to put Templenoe back in the lead. However, Templenoe then suffered a setback when John Rice received a second yellow card to reduce the hosts to 14 men coming into the closing minutes. But when substitute Cian Hallissey calmly fisted the ball over the bar near the finish to give Templenoe a 2 points cushion, it looked like the win was secured. However, somewhat similar to the previous weekend against Kerins O’Rahillys, Kenmare kept fighting to the end. Then deep in injury time a dangerous ball in towards the Templenoe goal, looked initially to have been kept out by Mark Looney and his defence, before the vigilant Paul O’Connor struck the ball to the net to bag Kenmare the spoils.

Credit to both sides for producing a thriller of game. Although the final result went Kenmare’s way, Templenoe will still take great encouragement from this performance and will hope to have better luck against Kerins O’Rahillys away in the final round of the group stages.

Kerry Petroleum Senior Football Club Championship, Round 1.

Dr Crokes 1-18, Templenoe 0-10.

Dr Crokes produced a powerful display to blow Templenoe out of the water in the opening round of the County Club Championship in FitzGerald Stadium Killarney last Friday evening. This eagerly awaited tie saw a Templenoe game streamed live for the first time in a match that had only 200 people (including players) in attendance due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Templenoe who were without County star Tadhg Morley due to injury, played with the wind for first half on a damp evening, but it was Dr Crokes who opened the scoring with Tony Brosnan making no mistake with a close range free. David Shaw added another point for the Crokes, before Stephen O’Sullivan got Templenoe off the mark in the 6^th minute following a good team move involving Gavin Crowley and Killian Spillane. Before the first water break, Dr Crokes who were dominating the around the middle of the field extended their lead by 0-05 to 0-02, courtesy of 3 more points from Tony Brosnan, while Templenoe who lost Teddy Doyle to injury had another score from play through Stephen O’Sullivan.

When play resumed Micheal Burns exchanged points with Killian Spillane. Soon after both teams went agonisingly close to getting a goal with Chris Doncel striking the post for Dr Crokes, before Adrian Spillane did likewise for Templenoe with a piledriver at the other end. Had this effort gone in, Templenoe would have been back on level terms with half time approaching. Instead things took a turn for the worse for Templenoe, with the Killarney side hitting 1-03 without reply, to end the game as a contest. The Crokes goal came about after a free from Mark O’Shea found Tony Brosnan in a bit of space to fire the ball home past the impressive Mark Looney, who made a few fine saves throughout the game on his first competitive outing for the Templenoe seniors. David Shaw (2) and Michael Potts had points to inflict further misery on Templenoe. Although to their credit Templenoe did claw back two points with Stephen O’Sullivan and Sean Sheehan finding the target, but Crokes had the final say of the half with Tony Brosnan adding another point to his tally.

Dr Crokes with their superior fitness levels on the evening, continued where they left off in the second half with another 3 unanswered points from Tony Brosnan (2) and Micheal Burns in the opening minutes. Templenoe were finding it difficult to get back into the game and their chances were limited, but Colin Crowley did find an opening to give them their first score of the second half. Tony Brosnan immediately responded for the Crokes before Brian Crowley swapped points with Brian Looney to make the score 1-16 to 0-07 before the second half water break. The final quarter saw both sides taking the opportunity to empty their benches. Crokes pushed on to show their class by running at the Templenoe defence with pace to create two more scores for David Shaw and Micheal Burns. On an evening to forget for Templenoe, they did have 3 late points courtesy of Killian Spillane to put a bit more respect on the scoreboard. Attention will now turn to round 2 of the competition.
