Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate Football Championship, Templenoe V Spa Match Report
County IFC Round 3, Templenoe V Spa Match Report
Templenoe 2-13, Spa 0-12.
Templenoe went into this match knowing that a 4 point win might be required for them to progress in the Intermediate Championship. The home side rose to this challenge winning by 7 points in an exciting game played before a large crowd in Templenoe last Sunday and they have now qualified for their third successive Intermediate Championship Semi Final.
The match was played in difficult underfoot conditions and Templenoe opted to play with a strong wind in the first half. Templenoe almost had a goal inside the first minute, through Killian Spillane, but his effort hit the post. Spa then worked the ball up the field to open the scoring with a point from play through Midfielder Michael Garnett. A minute later Killian Spillane traded scores with Michael O’Donoghue (free) to leave the home side trailing by 1 point after 5 minutes. The next 5 minutes saw Templenoe play some excellent football with Cian Hallissey expertly striking two frees from the right side and in between Templenoe scored their first goal with a good ball in from Teddy Doyle putting Stephen O’Sullivan through for a well taken goal. Brian Crowley then added 2 points to put Templenoe ahead by 1-6 to 0-2 after just 10 minutes of play. Former County Minor Dara Moynihan got a badly needed score for the visitors in the 14 minute, as they tried to get back in to the game. The next 10 minutes saw Brian Crowley and Cian Hallissey (free) swap scores with Michael O’Donoghue (free) and Michael Foley, before Stephen O’Sullivan added another point to his tally. The half ended with a goal bound effort from Spa saved by Anthony Sheehan. Ciaran Spillane took the resultant 45 short to David Spillane, who popped the ball over the bar.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-9, Spa 0-6.
Templenoe increased their advantage with another from play from Killian Spillane inside the 2nd minute of the Second half. However, Spa responded with scores from Ciaran Spillane (45) and Michael Foley. Play was delayed for a time in the second half after Spa wing forward David Spillane to whom everyone wishes a speedy recovery went down injured.
Soon after play resumed Cian Hallissey made no mistake with another placed ball effort for Templenoe. However the Killarney side were not giving up, and two points from Ryan O’Carroll and Michael Foley left just 4 points between the sides 23 minutes into the second half. Templenoe’s passing was a bit sloppy at times in the second half, but they did manage to steady the ship a bit with Teddy Doyle (free) and Brian Crowley putting some more daylight between the sides. The remaining minutes saw 2 points (1 free) from Evan Cronin cut the lead to just four points again, but then the result was beyond doubt when the in rushing Brian Crowley fisted the ball into the net after a good ball across the goal by Stephen O’Sullivan.
Final Score: Templenoe 2-13, Templenoe 0-12

Round 2 County Intermediate Football Championship Match Report, Gneeveguilla V Templenoe
Full Time Score: Gneeveguilla 0-11, Templenoe 0-10
Templenoe hopes for a County Intermediate title suffered a setback last Sunday following a one point defeat away to Gneeveguilla. This result now means that nothing less than a win at home to Spa next Sunday can save Templenoe chances in the competition and they may need to do so by a few points, pending the outcome of the other match in the group.
Last Sunday’s game was a hard fought encounter and Templenoe started well with Cian Hallissey opening the scoring from a free. However, a fired up Gneeveguilla side determined to prove their worth at Intermediate level replied with scores from Padraig O’Sullivan (free) and Mark Sheehan to give them a lead, they would never relinquish. Uncharacteristically, Templenoe struggled badly for scores throughout the first half, which was not helped by them hitting 7 wide’s and giving away possession cheaply at times. To their credit Gneeveguilla did take the most of the scoring opportunities that came their way and it must also be acknowledged that they won a lot of 50/50 balls as well. Towards the end of the first quarter a goal bound fisted effort from Josh Crowley Holland was cleared off the line before two points from Cornelius Buckley (1 free) extended the East Kerry’s side’s advantage by 0-4 to 0-1 after 20 minutes of play. In between Templenoe’s Adrian Spillane on one of his trade mark runs blasted a low shot just wide of the far post. Instead it was Gneeveguilla that went on to consolidate their position with Patrick Warren and Conlon O’Leary (free) both splitting the posts. All the while the frustration continued for Templenoe before they eventually got their second score courtesy of a pointed free from Killian Spillane. However, it was Gneeveguilla who had the final say in the half with Cornelius Buckley slotting over another free.
Half Time Score: Gneeveguilla 0-7, Templenoe 0-2.
The opening minutes of the second half saw Gneeveguilla increase their lead yet again thanks to a Conlon O’Leary effort from play, before Templenoe finally started to rally getting the next four points in a row to reduce the deficit to just two points. The scores came from Adrian Spillane (2) along with two placed ball efforts from Cian Hallissey and Killian Spillane. Soon after Conlon O’Leary (free) traded scores with Cian Hallissey before Gneeveguilla midfielder Padraig O’Connor popped over a great point to make the score 0-10 to 0-7 at the end of the third quarter. Another sign that this would not be Templenoe’s day came in the 20th minute, when a well struck shot at goal by Stephen O’Sullivan came off the post after he was put through by Brian Crowley. However, the visitors battled on and a pointed free from Cian Hallissey cut the margin again, but Gneeveguilla had no intention of letting this game slip and their next attack saw them recycle the ball well before setting Patrick Warren up for a crucial score. There were a share of stoppages in the second of half with two Templenoe players Kieran O’Neill and substitute Pat Spillane picking up black cards, while Gneeveguilla finished the game with 14 men after Cornelius Buckley was red carded following a high tackle on Brian Crowley late on. Two injury time points from Tadhg Morley and Killian Spillane (free) brought the visitors to within a point of Gneeveguilla. Then amid a frantic finish Templenoe worked the ball all the way up to the field for one last attack. The move ended with Patrick Clifford under pressure from defenders attempting to offload the ball just in front of goal to Adrian Spillane, but referee awarded a free away out to Gneeveguilla. The Ref adjudged Templenoe to have picked the ball off the ground. The home side then cleared their lines and there was time for no more.
Final Score: Gneeveguilla 0-11, Templenoe 0-10
