Finnegan Cup Final 2014, Templenoe V Kenmare
Templenoe 3-10, Kenmare 0-06
Templenoe retained the Finnegan Cup with a strong 2nd half display against Kenmare. The match was played on a dry pitch with no wind, but the low sun was causing problems for the team attacking the western goal.
Before the throw in, a minutes silence was observed for the late Noel O’Brien and PJ McIntyre.
Kenmare started brightly, and had their best period of the match where they scored 0-5 inside the first 12 minutes. Stephen O’Brien was very dangerous and winning a lot of quick ball kicked into him. He pointed two frees and a point from play, but the two best scores of the half came from corner forward Kieran Fitzgibbon, who volleyed over two points in the space of a few minutes.
Templenoe on the other hand, were slow to get going and only registered a point in the first ten minutes. They seemed to struggle with the low sun, and were slow delivering the ball into the forwards. Brian Crowley opened the scoring on the 10th minute with a free, and then had to wait until the 20th minute for the next score. In the opening period, Templenoe missed a number of frees, and had a goal disallowed for a square ball after a dropping free kick was punched to the net in the square.
Killian Spillane pointed Templenoe’s 2nd point from a free, and Brian Crowley followed soon after with Templenoe’s opening score from play. The Kenmare goalie, Ray O’Shea, produced a great double save, but soon afterwards Templenoe worked the ball quickly up the right wing, and found Sean Sheehan rushing through to finish the ball to the net. This left the half time score, Templenoe 1-03, Kenmare 0-05.
The 2nd half started off sluggishly, and it waited 5 minutes to see the first score, which came from a sweeping move involving Tadhg Morley and Gavin Crowley who pointed. Killian Spillane pointed a lovely point from near the left side line, and Daniel O’Neill moved up the field to register a point on the 40 minute mark.
The match was decided in the next 5 minutes, when Killian Spillane finished off two well worked goals. The match began to get very scrappy, and two Kenmare players received red cards. Templenoe closed out the match in the final ten minutes, and got further scores from Brian Crowley and Martin Reilly (2). The final score of the match was pointed by Shane Dalton for Kenmare, leaving Templenoe the 2014 Finnegan Cup Champions on a score of Templenoe 3-10, Kenmare 0-06.
Mike O’Sullivan of the Kenmare District Board, thanked the ref Peter Lyons and the Kenmare Co-op Mart for their sponsorship of the competition. He presented the cup to Templenoe captain, Shane Cremin, who also got the man of the match award.
