County Novice Final 2013, CHAMPIONS
CHAMPIONS
Templenoe 2-15, Listry 2-13
Castleisland Mart Novice Football Championship Final (Taken from www.kerrygaa.ie)
Templenoe 2-15 Listry 2-13
Templenoe are the County Novice Final winners following a fantastic final that ebbed and flowed from the start with fortunes changing at regular intervals.
We saw a frantic opening with each side scoring two points inside the opening four minutes of play and they both added points before Templenoe, and Brian Crowley in particular, grabbed the initiative with the eventual man of the match scoring four points without reply in a six minute spell to lead by 7 to 3 at the end of the first quarter.
Anthony Kennedy replied with a good point, and then sub Derry Ahern, who had just been introduced, finished to the net at the second attempt to level the game in the 18th minute. From the kick out the ball was in the net at the other end when a high ball from Teddy Doyle was punched to the net by Killian Spillane after a mistake by a Listry defender. The drama in this two minute spell was not over yet as quickly the ball was in the other half of the field and Derry Ahern again cut through the Templenoe defence for his second goal. Listry actually took the lead for the first time when Damien Clifford pointed in the 27th minute but Templenoe finished the half with two points of their own to lead by 1-10 to 2-6 at the break.
Listry resumed in determined mood kicking three unanswered points to retake the lead and for a while they seemed to be on top but then Cian Hallissey struck for a Templenoe goal after being set up initially by Teddy Doyle and when Killian Spillane pointed the winners were 2-11 to 2-9 ahead with twenty minutes still to go. The sides swapped points as the excitement grew and when Kieran Kennedy’s inspirational point left just a pint between the sides, a draw looked on the cards. John Spillane and Sean Lehane then traded points before Teddy Doyle’s massive drive from 65yards sailed over the bar for the insurance score for Templenoe.
The Hickey/Quirke Cup was presented to Templenoe captain Anthony Sheehan by Vice Chairman of the County Committee Ger Galvin.
The Man of the Match trophy was presented to Brian Crowley, who finished with six points from play by Jimmy Roche of Castleisland Co-Op Mart sponsors of the Competition.
