Templenoe 1-11, Sneem / Derrynane 3-06
A point in injury time, gave Sneem / Derrynane a narrow victory over Templenoe in the Thade Morley Memorial Cup, played in Dromore on a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon.
Sean Sheehan opened the scoring with a point fired into a very strong wind, but Sneem / Derrynane responded with a goal through full forward Donal Galvin. Both teams took a while to settle down to the conditions, and scores were hard to come by. A long ball into the Sneem / Derrynane square resulted in a Templenoe penalty which was well dispatched by Brian Crowley.
The visitors rallied, and pointed through Morgan O’Donoghue and a fine point from midfielder Adrian Breen. These efforts were matched by Templenoe, with Brian Crowley and Denis O’Neill getting the scores. This trend continued as the match approached half time, with a brace of points for Sneem / Derrynane being answered to by two by Martin Reilly for Templenoe. The score at half time was Templenoe 1-05, Sneem / Derrynane 1-04
Templenoe started the second half with the aid of a very strong breeze, but again took a while to get going. They started to get into a rhythm, and got scores through Patrick Palmer, Teddy Doyle, and Adrian Spillane (2). This left five points between the teams halfway through the second half.
Templenoe started to look comfortable at this stage, but Donal Galvin struck for his second goal to bring the visitors right back into the mix. Adrian Breen tagged on another point, but Templenoe responded through two fine points by Adrian Spillane.
With time running out Sneem / Derrynane started to press for a goal, but their efforts were stopped by two great saves by Templenoe Goalie, Colm Breen. More drama was to follow, when a 45, floated into the square, ended up in a penalty for Sneem / Derrynane, which was finished to the net by Ian Galvin. With the team’s level at this stage, Sneem / Derrynane who were playing the better football, pushed on and Morgan O’Donoghue kicked over the winning point. Templenoe pushed to get an equalizing score, but time was against them, leaving the final score, Templenoe 1-11, Sneem / Derrynane 3-06.
