McCarthys Insurance Group South Kerry League Final Match Report
McCarthy Insurance Group South Kerry Senior Football League Final:
Templenoe 1-05, Waterville 0-07.
Templenoe are South Kerry league champions for 2023 following a narrow one-point victory over Waterville at a wet and windy Valentia last Saturday. This is Templenoe’s second South Kerry senior league title since the club first entered this competition back in 1998.
Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, there was still a good turn out to witness this final. The fact that both teams could only manage one point each when playing into the strong breeze, underlines just how much of an impact the weather conditions had on this game. Templenoe were the more wasteful of the two sides with eleven wides while Waterville had a total of four wides.
Templenoe had the wind advantage for the first half and got their first score three minutes in through Colin Crowley. A minute later Colin Crowley went one better when he got inside the Waterville defence before rounding the keeper and finishing the ball home. This goal was to prove crucial in the finish. Soon after Stephen O’Sullivan had another goal chance for Templenoe, but Waterville keeper Cillian O’Shea was equal to his effort. Templenoe were dominating but not capitalizing on the scoreboard as they would have liked. Though Stepen O’Sullivan did add another score from a mark to put Templenoe 1-02 to 0-00 ahead by the 13th minute. Barry Dwyer opened Waterville’s account with a well struck free from an angle and this would be their only score of the first half. The wides continued to mount for Templenoe in the second quarter, who ultimately had to settle for just two more scores before the break courtesy of a 45 from Aidan Crowley and a fine score from corner back Michael Hallissey.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-04, Waterville 0-01.
Kerry U20 panelist Mark Casey was introduced for Templenoe for the second half, but the question was the Templenoe lead enough of a foundation to withstand the likely Waterville fight back over the next half hour of football. The third quarter saw Waterville reduce the margin to just a goal courtesy of three points from Barry Dwyer, with two from frees and one from play. In between, Templenoe’s John Moriarty had a goal bound shot saved by Cillian O’Shea. Both sides squandered chances over the next few plays, before Barry Dwyer eventually added another point in the 52nd minute. The score was now 1-04 to 0-05. Templenoe needed a score to help steady the ship and finally after a gap of 29 minutes from their last score, Aidan Crowley kept his composure to slot over the side’s only score, but a very important one in the second half. Credit to Waterville they kept coming even after losing Cillian Clifford to a second yellow card and points from Barry Dwyer and Oran Clifford deep into injury time did bring the margin down to the minimum, but there was to be time for no more.
After the game the South Kerry League Cup was presented to Templenoe captain Joseph Sheehan. Congratulations to all our players and management on winning the club’s first bit of silverware since the Munster Intermediate Club title in December 2019, not forgetting the many famous wins Templenoe had in between and hopefully more to follow.
Final Score: Templenoe 1-05, Waterville 0-07.

Credit Union County SFL Match Report, Templenoe v St Mary's
County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 3.Templenoe 2-07, St Marys 0-12.
Templenoe hosted St Marys in round 3 of the county league. After a hard-fought game played in tough conditions, a Sean Sheehan point eight minutes into injury time just about shaded this contest for Templenoe. Templenoe had wind advantage for the first half, but it was the visitors who were first to register on the scoreboard courtesy of a point from Ben O’Donoghue. Templenoe replied with Tom Spillane and Aidan Crowley both splitting the posts. Then midway through the first half Colin Crowley looked to be through on goal only to be denied by a superb save by St Marys keeper Mike Daly. The resultant 45 went wide and soon after St Marys had two points on the trot one from play and one from a free through Sean Cournane to make it 0-02 to 0-03 after 20 minutes of play.
The hosts had been threatening for goal and they eventually got one when Stephen O’Sullivan combined with Daniel Crowley for the second week in a row, with the latter once again applying the finish by palming the ball to the net from close in. Stephen O’Sullivan followed this up two fine points of his own to put Templenoe four points to the good. Shortly before the half time break, Muiris Fitzgerald scored the first of his two points for St Marys and then Templenoe went close on goal again only for Sean Sheehan to pull his shot wide. The first half ended on a difficult note for the hosts with John Rice having to be carried off the field with a knee injury and we all wish John a speedy recovery.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-04, St Marys 0-04.
St Marys started the second half well with a pointed free from Anthony Cournane. The Cahersiveen men were wide with their next two attacks, but by the 37th minute they were on level terms thanks to Alex Coffey and Anthony Cournane (f) both finding the range. However, credit to Templenoe they regrouped and a white flag from Sean Sheehan helped settle the nerves and then Templenoe were awarded penalty after a foul in the square. Stephen O’Sullivan stepped up and duly put the ball in St Marys net. Minutes later young Ciaran Crowley popped up from defence to score his first point in the county senior league to put the hosts 2-06 to 0-07 ahead 47 minutes in.
It was looking good for Templenoe at this stage, but St Marys had other ideas. The visitors had a late surge that saw them reel in Templenoe’s lead point by point to draw level again by the 64th minute, with Muiris Fitzgerald, Alex Coffey, Declan Keating (2) and Anthony Cournane all contributing. It made for a frantic finished with Templenoe losing Daniel Crowley to a black card, but just when it looked like there would be time for no more Tempenoe’s Colin Crowley drew a free from about 45 metres out for which Ronan Clifford was dismissed. Aidan Crowley struck the free and appeared to have both the distance and the accuracy only to drop short at the last moment, but luckily for the hosts Sean Sheehan rose the highest to fist the ball over the bar to bag the hosts a full share of the spoils after yet another close ending.
Final Score: Templenoe 2-07, St Marys 0-12.

Credit Union County SFL Match Report, Firies V Templenoe
County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 2.
Firies 1-08, Templenoe 2-05.
Templenoe made the trip to Farranfore to take on newly promoted Firies in round 2 of the county league last Sunday. A draw was the final result, but probably fair to say that Templenoe will be the happier of the two sides with the outcome, having been behind for so long until two goals within a minute from Daniel Crowley late on blew the contest wide open.
The match was played in dry conditions with a cross field breeze, which appeared to make it harder for both teams to score from long range. Templenoe were boosted by the availability of Gavin Crowley. Firies almost got off to the ideal start when Cian Doe found himself inside the Templenoe defence only to pull his shot wide. However, five minutes later the home side did raise a green flag, after a Padraig de Bruin strike just about made it over the line. Templenoe replied with points from Stephen O’Sullivan and Aidan Crowley, but Firies were motoring better and playing with more cohesion in the first half, hit back with Niall Donohue, James Horgan (f) and Stephen Palmer all splitting the posts. This made the score 1-03 to 0-02 after 18 minutes. Things did not improve for the visitors in the remaining minutes of the first half with further Firies points from James Horgan (f) and Jake Flynn adding to their woes and in between Templenoe’s Daniel Crowley had a goal bound shot well saved by Firies keeper Trevor O’Shea. On a day where Templenoe kicked a total of 8 wides compared to 5 from Firies, scores were hard earned and Aidan Crowley had to battle past two Firies defenders to bag Templenoe’s third point of the day just before the half time whistle.
Half Time Score: Firies 1-05, Templenoe 0-03.
At the restart, Mark Looney was called upon to deny a goal from Firies Stephen Palmer after he found himself one on one with the Templenoe keeper. The visitors were then hit with a further blow, when Michael Hallissey had to retire injured. Firies however were showing no mercy and extended their lead to six points with Cian Doe getting his name on the scoreboard. Jack Sherwood and Gavin Crowley were having a mighty duel at midfield throughout, but it was Templenoe’s other midfielder Sean Sheehan who was next to find the range with a fine score from distance. Stephen O’Sullivan added another with Templenoe’s only point from a placed ball, before TJ Palmer ventured up from defence to keep Firies in control position with a well taken point to make it 1-07 to 0-05 after 44 minutes of play. Three wides on the trot followed from Templenoe and the game looked like it was reaching an inevitable conclusion, but Daniel Crowley didn’t read that script. Two goals within minute after two good team moves, saw Stephen O’Sullivan pick out Daniel Crowley both times with the latter finishing to the net perfectly on the double. Templenoe were now ahead for the first time 1-07 to 2-05 with only 5 minutes remaining and suddenly the pressure was on Firies. Templenoe funnelled bodies back in a bid to close out the game and it worked initially, but Firies remained patient and grabbed their equalized through the boot of Padraig de Bruin. There was still time for either side to steal it at the finish, but no further score materialised.
Final Score: Firies 1-08, Templenoe 2-05.
Scorers:
Firies: Padraig de Bruin 1-01, James Horgan 0-02 (2f), Stephen Palmer 0-01, Niall Donohue 0-01, Jake Flynn 0-01, Cian Doe 0-01, TJ Palmer 0-01.
