Credit Union County Senior Football League, Round 10 Match Report, Templenoe V Listowel Emmets
County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 10.
Templenoe 2-05, Listowel Emmets 0-08.
Templenoe welcomed the visit of Listowel Emmets for the penultimate round of the county league last Sunday. A strong finish by the hosts saw them come from behind to bag a full share of the spoils and move up to fifth place in the table. Although promotion is now out of reach for Templenoe, neither Templenoe nor Listowel will have any relegation concerns coming into the final round, after Firies lost out to Glenbeigh/Glencar in their round 10 game.
Listowel Emmets had the aid of a strong breeze for the first half, but probably fair to say they didn’t capitalize on this advantage in a way they would liked. The visitors kicked five points in the first half and although they did keep Templenoe scoreless for the first 30 minutes, they never really got a run on them. David Keane opened the scoring five minutes in with a point from play. Then with Listowel dominating midfield, pressing the kickouts and turning over numerous Templenoe attacks, they tagged on three more points through Bryan Sweeney (2f) and David Keane to make the score 0-00 to 0-04 by the end of the first quarter. However, Listowel failed to push on with their shooting letting them down – hitting four wides on the trot, while at the other end Templenoe were still trying to find ways to open-up the Listowel defence. Then towards the end of the first half a high long-range kick from Sean Sheehan got held up by the strong breeze, before the vigilant Patrick Clifford gathered possession in the square and finished the ball to the net to bring the hosts to within a point of Listowel. Buoyed by the goal, Templenoe won the subsequent kick out to launch another offensive with Patrick Clifford immediately adding a point to their tally. However, a pointed free from David Keane gave the visitors the edge at the break.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-01, Listowel Emmets 0-05.
At the restart Listowel Emmets almost had a goal only for Templenoe keeper Mark Looney to divert the ball out for a 45. Listowel continued to probe the Templenoe defence but had to wait until the 37th minute to extend their lead with centre forward Darragh Lynch splitting the posts. Stephen O’Sullivan responded with a monstrous free making full use of the strong wind behind him to pull one back for Templenoe. The hosts had chances to level the scores in the ensuing plays but were off target with their efforts, until Aidan Crowley made no such mistake from a placed ball in the 45th minute to tie the contest at 1-03 to 0-06. The game was now there for the taking for either side and by the 57th minute it was Listowel who were in the ascendancy by the minimum, courtesy of scores from Bryan Sweeney (f) and Eddie Browne either side of another pointed free from Stephen O’Sullivan. Then came the pivotal score of the game, when a great team move by the hosts ended with Hugh Granville giving a precision pass to Stephen O’Sullivan who was through on goal and duly dispatched the ball to the net to put the hosts in front for the first time. Templenoe then sealed the contest with Patrick Clifford thumping over their last point.
Final Score: Templenoe 2-05, Listowel Emmets 0-08.

Credit Union County Senior Football League, Round 9 Match Report, An Ghaeltacht V Templenoe
County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 9.
An Ghaeltacht 3-15, Templenoe 0-10.
A depleted Templenoe made the long trip to Gallarus to take on An Ghaeltacht in round 9 of the county league. This was always going to be uphill struggle for Templenoe without the services of so many first team players, but they gave it their all against a formidable An Ghaeltacht side.
An Ghaeltacht had the assistance of the breeze for the first half. The hosts set the tone early and raced into a 0-07 to 0-01 lead by the end of the first quarter, with Dara Ó Sé their chief scorer in attack, while Templenoe’s solitary score in this period came from Danny Cahalane. The visitors did fare a bit better in front of the posts in the second quarter, but any faint hopes of an upset were well put to bed, when Dara Ó Sé and Tomás Ó Sé both found the net to give the West Kerry side a substantial lead at the break.
Half Time Score: An Ghaeltacht 2-11, Templenoe 0-05.
The second half afforded both sides the opportunity to empty their benches. Templenoe did bring down the deficit to 10 points at one stage in the second half, but that was as close as they could get. An Ghaeltacht substitute Gearóid Breathnach goaled late on to put a gloss on a comprehensive win for the hosts.

Credit Union County Senior Football League, Round 8 Match Report, Templenoe V Glenflesk
County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 8.
Templenoe 0-16, Glenflesk 1-17.
Templenoe hosted Glenflesk in round 8 of the county league last Sunday in glorious sunshine. After a high scoring encounter, Glenflesk emerged victorious with four points to spare. The turning point came 13 minutes in, when Dara Roche converted a penalty after Templenoe had opened up a three points advantage and the hosts never regained the lead thereafter.
There was large crowd in attendance to witness this game, with the league now starting to enter the business end of the season. The hosts started well outscoring Glenflesk by 0-5 to 0-02 in the opening 12 minutes with Stephen O’Sullivan, Colin Crowley (2), Sean Sheehan and Patrick Clifford all contributing. Indeed, the latter was unlucky not to have goaled his effort with the ball scrapping the top of the crossbar. Glenflesk for their part had Dara Roche in fine form throughout, with the first of his scores coming two minutes in and Jeff O’Donoghue added a second score after 11 minutes of play. Then came the pivotal moment when Ian Roche was adjudged to have been fouled inside the box. His brother Dara stepped up and gave Templenoe keeper Mark Looney no chance with his finish, to tie the contest. A water break was granted by the referee to allow both sets of players time for a much-needed drink in the soaring heat.
When the teams re-emerged, Glenflesk full back Daniel O’Brien briefly joined the attack to put the visitors in front for the first time. Colin Crowley then traded scores with Ian Roche, before Darragh Roche showed his class to fire over two more points, either side of an Aidan Crowley white flag for the hosts with one of Roches’s scores coming from an acute angle.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-07, Glenflesk 1-06.
Templenoe were dealt a blow at half-time with centre forward Patrick Clifford deemed not fit enough to continue. Nonetheless, the hosts proved they were still up the fight with Gavin Crowley powering his way through the defence to get his name on the scoresheet at the restart. Darragh Roche responded in kind, before Colin Crowley put over a beautiful long-range attempt in the 32nd minute. The following seven minutes saw the East Kerry side enjoy a purple patch with Darragh Roche (3) and Sean Doherty pointing in quick succession, with Templenoe’s only reply in between coming from a Stephen O’Sullivan point from play. This put daylight between the sides with the score now 0-10 to 1-11. From here on the visitors pretty much kept Templenoe at arm’s length. Aidan Crowley and Gavin Crowley exchanged points with John Kelliher and Jeff O’Donoghue to leave score 0-12 to 1-13 going into the second half water break.
Templenoe’s cause wasn’t helped when they lost key players Mark Casey and Gavin Crowley to injury in the final quarter, but to their credit they kept plugging away. In fact, the hosts matched Glenflesk for scores (0-04 apiece) in the home stretch, but despite their best efforts Templenoe just could not manufacture a goal to pull this game back from the brink. Stephen O’Sullivan (3) and Aidan Crowley had scores to keep the encounter alive until the end for the hosts, but Glenflesk had points courtesy of brothers Darragh (2) and Dylan Roche (2) to make sure the visitors weren’t going to be caught.
Final Score: Templenoe 0-16, Glenflesk 1-17.
Scorers:
Templenoe: Stephen O’Sullivan 0-05 (3f), Colin Crowley 0-04, Aidan Crowley 0-03 (2), Gavin Crowley 0-02, Sean Sheehan 0-01, Patrick Clifford 0-01.

Billy Clifford RIP
All at Templenoe GAA Club were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Billy Clifford, Raycoslough on Thursday, 25th May 2023.
Billy was a lifelong member and supporter of Templenoe GAA Club and followed the teams through thick and thin. He was a valued part of the Templenoe GAA field committee and generously volunteered his time to help prepare the pitch and direct match day traffic. Indeed, as recently as last Sunday’s county senior league game against Currow, Billy could be seen gathering up the sideline flags after the final whistle.
Templenoe GAA Club extends our deepest condolences to all the Clifford family.
