Division 2 County Senior Football League Match Report, Templenoe V Listry
Division 2, County Senior Football League, Round 1.
Templenoe 3-13, Listry 0-10.
Templenoe welcomed Listry to our GAA grounds for the opening round of the County League. Templenoe cruised to victory in the finish, but it was a competitive game for three quarters of the contest, before a second yellow card for Listry’s Centre back gave the host’s a numerical advantage, that they were not going to squander.
Listry had the aid of a strong breeze for the first half, but it was Templenoe who were first off the mark, with Cian Hallissey and Stephen O’Sullivan slotting over the first two scores of the game. Listry responded with a placed ball effort from Anthony Sweeney, before Aaron McCarthy tied up the scores with a neat point. Then in the 6th minute, a high ball in from Teddy Doyle was gathered by Stephen O’Sullivan, before turning and firing the ball to the net from close range. Listry corner forward Sean O’Sullivan called a mark, before he beautifully floated the ball over the bar from the inside of his right boot to reduce the arrears to two points before Stephen O’Sullivan and Anthony Sweeney exchanged scores. John Rice got forward for two well taken points, but Listry countered through scores from Gary O’Sullivan and the unerring accuracy of Anthony Sweeney to keep them in touch. The ebb and flow nature of the contest continued right up to the break with Anthony Sweeney cancelling out another Templenoe point, this time from Teddy Doyle.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-06, Listry 0-07.
Templenoe introduced Killian Spillane for the second half to join his brothers Adrian (who was brought in after 18 minutes) and Tom, as the hosts demonstrated their intent to take a full share of the spoils. Ronan Buckley reduced the margin to the minimum in the 31st minute with a white flag for the visitors. However, Templenoe hit back with Killian Spillane calling the mark and pointing to precede a lovely long range score from County Senior league debutant Colin Crowley to put the home side three points ahead. With the rain now pelting down, Templenoe were determined to push on and Stephen O’Sullivan put a bit of day light between the sides, when he pointed to make the score 1-09 to 0-08 points after 42 minutes. Soon after disaster struck for Listry, when they were reduced to 14 men after centre back John Foley was dismissed after he picked up a second yellow card. From there on Templenoe were in pretty much complete control of proceedings and further points followed from Stephen O’Sullivan (2) and Killian Spillane to extend their lead to seven points. Listry did reply with two points courtesy of Ronan Buckley and Anthony Sweeney, but ultimately they could not live with the Templenoe fire power. Another Templenoe County Senior League debutant Daniel Crowley set up Stephen O’Sullivan to fist home Templenoe’s second goal, before Killian Spillane showed his class to turn his marker before dispatching the ball to the net for Templenoe’s third goal. Templenoe signed off on their win with Brian Crowley adding his name to the scoresheet.
