Match Reports 2014

Templenoe 4-08, Lispole 1-10

The goals proved the difference between the two teams, in a match played on a perfect Saturday evening for football in Templenoe.

Both teams opened their scoring  with points from frees, but within five minutes of the start, a very quick team move involving numerous Templenoe players, saw Sean Sheehan score Templenoe’s first goal.

Brian Crowley pointed his 2nd free, but this was quickly cancelled out by a Declan O’Sullivan point for the visitors. A great run from the right corner by Denis O’Neill resulted in another home point, and soon afterwards, John Rice turned a good point scoring opportunity into a goal by smashing home a shot from 20 meters out. Garrett Noonan reduced Templenoe’s lead with a point, leaving the score after 20 minutes, Templenoe 2-03, Lispole 0-04.

A patient Lispole move yielded a point from full forward, Cathal O’Sullivan and the quickly followed up with another point from Garrett Noonan. This score came from a great save by Anthony Sheehan.

Approaching the end of the 1st interval, Pat Spillane picked off another Templenoe goal, and Teddy Doyle closed out the 1st half scoring with a well struck long range free. The half time score was Templenoe 3-04, Lispole 0-05

Cian Hallissey got the 1st point of the second half from a free. Following on from the 1st half, Garrett Noonan cancelled this out with another free. Cian Hallissey won a great ball in midfield, and played Teddy Doyle through. Teddy continued his run from 35 yards out and finished the ball low to the Lispole net for Templenoe’s fourth goal. Cian Hallissey followed up with another free from the right wing.

Despite the difference in the scoreline, Lispole started to come in strongly into the game. They started to gain the upper hand in midfield, and picked off points from Kieran T O’Sullivan, Cathal O’Sullivan and Donnacha Higgins. On the 43rd minute, Garrett Noonan cleverly took a quick free 25 metres from the Templenoe goal, and smashed the ball to the net. The score on the 45 minute mark was Templenoe 4-06, Lispole 1-09.

Lispole were playing with great determination and added the next score. Their two man full forward line was winning a lot of possession, but many attacks were breaking down. Brian Crowley finally ended the Templenoe scoring drought with a free. Cian Hallissey kicked Templenoe’s last point, and despite great Lispole effort in the dying minutes, Lispole could only manage another point, leaving the full time score, Templenoe 4-08, Lispole 1-10.

Glenflesk 0-13, Templenoe 4-10

A very impressive team performance from Templenoe, saw them record a great win away to Glenflesk in a match played in ideal conditions before a very large crowd.

An early Brian Crowley point was quickly cancelled out by the home team, and Glenflesk were quick to settle into their stride and opened a Glenflesk 0-04 to Templenoe 0-01 by the five minute mark. Both teams swapped scores, before Brian Crowley notched his second score of the match. Again Glenflesk responded with the next two points. Glenflesk were playing with a firm breeze in the 1st half, and looked very comfortable kicking for scores in this period.

The crucial period of the half came after a Sean Sheehan point saw the score Glenflesk 0-08, Templenoe 0-04 on the 20 minute mark. Good defensive work by Daniel O’Neill saw the ball overturned, and the ball was quickly swept up the field to Teddy Doyle who finished to the net.

Glenflesk again responded with a point, but another good Templenoe move five minutes later resulted in Templenoe’s 2nd goal from Brian Crowley. Denis O’Neill scored the last point of the half, leaving the scoreline, Glenflesk 0-09, Templenoe 2-05.

Despite playing against the breeze, Glenflesk drew level by pointing two quick frees after the resumption. Good work by Pat Spillane on the 37th minute saw Brian Crowley get his second goal, but Glenflesk again responded with another free. The next two points came the way of the visitors through Daniel O’Neill and Donal Casey.

Glenflesk continue to keep in touch with another free coming into the last ten minutes, but Teddy Doyle responded with a long range free, which was followed up by a great John Rice from the right wing.

The game was finished off as a contest with a late Teddy Doyle goal, and Templenoe finished off the scoring through a Sean Sheehan point leaving the final score, Glenflesk 0-13, Templenoe 4-10.

Crowley spot on for Kenmare

By Murt Murphy

Kenmare District 3-11 St Kieran’s 2-12

Shades of the SFC final of ’87 when Kenmare, with Pat Spillane a key figure, snatched victory with a late injury-time goal against Dr Crokes.

At the Fitzgerald Stadium last night, it was Spillane’s young Kenmare District side that snatched a 63rd-minute winning goal, from a Brian Crowley penalty, that broke St Kieran’s hearts.

It was a remarkable game, the sides level at half-time 2-5 apiece, with

Brian Crowley missing a penalty and scoring two goals, one from play and the other from a second penalty.

Mike Finnegan and Gearóid McCarthy had goals for St Kieran’s, who appeared to take a firm grip on proceedings early in the second-half, with Kerry Junior captain Thomas Hickey kicking three points and Shane O’Connor with two points, as they moved 2-12 to 2-8 clear.

However, with Cian Hallissey unerring from frees and St Kieran’s losing one player to a black card and Eoin Murphy to a red, the pendulum swung to Spillane’s side and points from Pat Spillane, Gavin Crowley and Cian Hallissey just left a point between the sides.

Then Brian Clifford was fouled deep in injury-time and Brian Crowley, who could have tapped it over to earn his side a replay, went for broke. That decision paid a handsome dividend.
